2023 Fishing thread

I’m going out at 9 in Ipswich Bay with my buddy tonight. Using live eels, sidescan sonar and night vision 😎
Hopefully we’ll catch some big stripers. Though we can’t keep them until the commercial season opens up

Heading to the Quabbin (Fishing Area 1) with my son for our annual fishing day on Thursday. Anyone been out there yet this year? What's biting and what are you using?
Well, deep trolling was a bust but we did pretty well drifting down the western shoreline. 3 decent size Bass.

Sunday AM on the lake - biggest of 8 we caught in about 2 hours.

Then on Monday AM, my SIL was on the Taunton in his kayak. In 2 days of fishing, he hooked into a BUNCH of stripers, landed a few dinks, lost two whales - both at the boat. Wife took this pic yesterday AM while out with him.

That’s mighty nice of you to take Broc fishing with you

Fishing spot was LOADED with fish but they weren’t super hungry. We were in shallow water and had fish swirling and splashing all around the boat. I hooked up quickly and my buddy lost one. Only landed one fish which was frustrating because we literally were watching the fish swim by the boat.

Anyway, landed a nice 41 incher. Fought pretty hard even with the drag locked up fairly tight. IMG_2702.jpeg IMG_2129.png

All of those white blobs and lines are stripers 😮 IMG_2119.jpeg

We bagged 4 yesterday in 2 hours. 2 MF pickerel and I got 2 Larry's. One that was probably half-a-keeper. He might have been 8" long. Maybe. He slammed a Texas rigged Senko like a 4# bass. I set teh hook and he moved about 10 feet. LOL. "Oh."

The other was bigger. 2-3#. My SIL hooked into a good one but it came unbuttoned right away. He tried to cast back and got his line tangled up in the Bimini cover. LOL.

I felt bad. 8 years ago we were in teh same place. He cast and loaded up on this HUGE bass. The fish is 10 feet from the boat and somehow comes unhooked. I dropped my Senko (again!) in front of it, it bit and about 4 seconds later it was in the boat. Seven pounds! "That's my fish!" I felt terrible then. I've never cast to his fish again. The kid spent countless hours in the next 2 years trying to catch a bigger fish - which he did. It was far more of a competition to him than I realized. What he doesn't realize is - he's 10x the fisherman I am. Maybe 100x.

The kid is a fishing machine...

Went out last night. I caught a fat 44 inch, two 42s and a few 38s. My buddy got about 5 fish but mainly 40-42 inchers.

What a fatty, he hit like a freight train. Smashed the eel on the surface and the splash was huge - that’s when I knew it was big 😂 IMG_2833.jpeg IMG_2203.jpeg IMG_2204.jpeg

Going out tonight for opening day of commercial striped bass fishing. Opens tomorrow but we’ll scout the area around 11 to be ready to start cranking em in.
My dad got a 49 incher yesterday on his fishing charter. The rest of his customers caught fish between 40-46". All big fish around

Had a tournament on Pontoosuc in Pittsfield on saturday. Threats of rain kept the lake pretty quiet which was nice. My son fished with me which was also nice. Had a bit under 10 lbs for my limit. Used to be a pretty good largemouth lake. Seems now the Smallmouth have taken over.

The surf bite is HOT in southern Maine, on artificials. The SP Minnow in green mac is almost making it boring. So far it's been mostly low 30" fish. Nothing under 27". Nothing yet on the fly. Not sure I want to battle a 35"er on fly gear though.

The sun finally broke through and surf fishing was tough at the drop this am. Fished the outflow of a tidal river, and caught a 20 something striper and a short flounder, on the fly. I can only cast this 10wt rig about 80' out front. I think bigger fish were staged 100' out. I'll break out the two hander next time.

Always happens to me fish breaking just outside my casting range.
Sounds like a good time nothing better then catching them on fly rod
