2018 fishing tread

Went out last night. These damned fish still can’t hit a frog. I only caught one with it. I did make one cast and when it landed 5 fish jumped right out of the water. I must have scared the shit out of them. This one swallowed the frog an the first hit. He was hooked in the roof of the mouth and I had to use needle nose pliers and a pair of forceps to get it out.

This one was the only one I could get through the lily pads. They were thick and I kept pulling the hook out.
I also caught 4 bluegills that we’re 1/2 lbs.

Fishing with my grandson...….

Nice picture. Need more guys to get the grand kids out there. My 7 year old Grandaughter loves to fish, especially with Papa. I am 71 and still fondly remember my Gramps taking me.

Last night fishing my secret spot we were doing pretty poorly. Me and my Father in law had 3 bass no bigger than 1 1/2 pounds between us. It was near dusk and I got slammed on a perfect cast on a weed line. I thought it was a 5 or 6 plus pound bass. I had it on my frog rod and straight 50lb test braid. It came up to the surface and it was the biggest pickerel I've even seen, probably over six pounds. We both saw it before it bit me off, taking my biggest pickerel ever and my 25$ megabass frog

I just got home from frogging. I missed about as many as I caught and had two come off reeling them in. One of those got so hung in the lily pads I had to give it slack until it came loose and he came off too. I pulled in 5 today after work. Took the same amount of ticks off me.

I did manage to catch this 4 Lber.

Another productive day Friday. On my way home from work I thought I’d hit a pond for 1/2 hr before stopping at the office. I was reeling in my frog and I see a bass following it. I stopped it at a weed line and she moves in like she was taking a sniff. I gave it a quick twitch and she couldn’t resist. Pulled her in and she weighed 3 lbs.

In my life, I've never had any success with a hollow body frog. There's got to be something wrong with me. Going now to try because I've got 45 mins before I have to leave for dinner. Wish me luck.

Up until this year I have caught exactly 0 fish on frogs. This year I decided to put in a bigger effort with them. I have had lots of misses and quite a few spit them free, but I’m having a great time. I even laugh when they spit them free or miss. I don’t know why, but I find it amusing. It’s even funnier when all the do is launch my frog into the air when they miss.

You have to find the right technique for the lake you’re on. One place I fish frogs is basically a GIANT mat of lily pads. There are sparse 1’x1’ holes in the pads where I get almost all my bites. I basically reel my frog into a hole and shake it there to disturb the water.

Another place I go has a lot of “lily pad islands” with open water between. I get bites there walking a frog at a medium-slow pace around the edges of the pads.

Try some different paces and actions to zero in on what the fish like.

I spent some time Sunday evening in the lilly pads with no luck in a pond that was almost unfishable, I was determined. I crashed the pads for almost 2 hours with not even a swirl. I ran in to a guy teaching his girlfriend how to fish using a sweet beaver and bang she catches a 6 lb bass. Later right at dusk I found fish hitting things on tops I put on a wopper flopper, 4 bass in the 2lb range in 20 minutes. I was out with a few good friends yesterday in Lakeville on his pontoon both caught fish one was a good one, I caught 0 fish using the same lures but still had a good time. No matter how good you think you are you still have to throw where the fish are. IMG_0015.JPG

Spent the last 2 mornings at 4:45 at the Canal. New Moon is today. Almost elbow-to-elbow this AM. Not so much yesterday with potential rain and an earlier low-tide. We were on the mainland side near the RR bridge.

We got a whole single bite in 4 or so hours fishing across 2 mornings. Oh well. Saw some BIG fish come back up the bike path. Guys huffing-and-puffing carrying a 20-30lb striper just by gripping it's gills. Sweat pouring off of them but beaming with pride.

This AM saw 2 guys hook in around me. Not very hot. Not like on Youtube where 4-5 guys in a row hook up. But still good. I think TOMORROW is the day. (And it's Saturday - I'll pass. It was sorta crowded today. PACKED tomorrow.) Getting up at 4am and then doing a "normal" day afterwards is for the birds. My stomach is all confused.

We saw some cool stuff today. Nothing SUPER out of the ordinary, but enjoyable all the same.

- Heron flying down-stream in the middle of the canal.
- Saw an Osprey fishing. Not just flying, but DIVEBOMB fishing. As J said, "He's better at it than us." "Well, we have a grocery store if we strike out, J."
- Saved a squid. I never knew we HAD squid in this AO. For some reason, I always assumed they were warmer-water "fish." The "beach" on the canal was littered with them. At first I thought it was some guy getting rid of his bait. But they were salmon/orange/pink/whatever colored. ????

Finally found one barely in the water. Sorta shoved it in deeper. It happily took off. There was something I've never done or seen in 49 years.

- Had this guy across the canal keep us in stitches. "RUSSELL!! GET OUT OF THE CANAL!!!! WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?? GET OUT. ARE YOU INSNAE! WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?" littered with F-bombs. After a minute of yelling, we realized Russell was a dog. Another minute, realized Russell was his FRIEND'S dog. Another minute - realized he's just always this loud and his friend was selectively ignoring him because all he does is yell.

I SWEAR it was the BABY FREAKIN WHEEL, JAY guy. Me and J (not Jay - no relation, guy, not even at teh Aqueeeeerrrriummm) were DYING laughing for about 5 min. Probably missed a fish because of it. LOL

All in all, I'm all done. 4am sucks ass. If we had caught a fish or two - even schoolies, I'd have considered going ever again.

I was glad to have the experience. Everyone was super friendly. I was pleasantly surprised at that. People tell "horror" stories of the Canal. Didn't experience that at all. Good bunch of guys (and a couple, very few, gals).

Oh, and as far as freshwater, which is where I spend 99.9999993733% of my time - I've got 2 words for dusk/dawn fishing.

WHOPPER. PLOPPER!!! Damn. Never used one before this year. Never had ANY real luck on a surface bait before. Love this lure. Worth every penny of the $12 they run. I used them early to nail Larry's in the reeds near shore. Using them at the pad edges in 10ft of water now to scoop up some pretty pissed off Sallys. Fun stuff.

I'll take a super spook over a plopped anyday. The plopped is still a great bait. My go to lures are a spook, a frog, and either a senko or some other softbait. I also love throwing big swimbaits in ponds and lakes

My sister’s two best friends and her friends boyfriend chartered my dads boat today. Biggest striper to ever land on my dad’s boat. Biggest one he’s ever seen or held actually. He’s been doing charters for 25 years and fishing for 60 years.

Wish I had gone out but I met them at the dock and got to hold this monstah.

BEAST!! 53" 50 pounds on a jigged poggie using a treble hook.
My sisters friend (for reference he’s about 5' 10"):

I just finished eating a piece of the filet now. Biggest striper filets I’ve ever seen. They were 2-3" thick!!

I got turned onto the plopper this year. Really nice bait but it’s hard to stomach 12 or 16$ for the bigger ones. What swimbaits do you use?

IMG_6230.jpg Ms slammers, DRT tiny klash and full size klash, huddlestons, og deps slide swimmer 175, matts hard gill, reps bull shooter 160, jackal gantarel, BDB plunker, and a roman made negotiator. All the gills are 5-7" the clashes are 6 and 9" a 7 and 9" ms slammer.

I don't carry one bait in my box, I have a big box with lots of lures and change them often. I don't catch fish every time but I do have fun trying. I'm not a fan of the higher prices but they do work. I use braid now because I hate seeing a big one break off and swim away with a $20 lure.

Went out this past Friday and had a pretty decent day. I caught 5 fish in the 1-1/2 lb range in about 2 hours. Lost 3 or 4.

Went out yesterday after work. I caught a 2-1/2 pounder on my second cast and thought "this is gonna be a good day for fishing" I proceeded to catch a .46 lb and nothing else. There were maybe 3 half hearted tries at my frog, but no real commitment. It was hot as hell and the water is probably too warm where I can cast too. It's too weedy to use anything else that will go deeper.

2-1/2 lb

Nice work. Any fish is good fish. (Except pickerel. Those things look. . . and act. . . prehistoric. I avoided them all season this year successfully.).

Next week it'll be cooler. I suspect the lakes will give up some decent energy over the next few weeks of 60-degree nights. At some point, I'm going to learn how to late-summer/early-fall fish the lake. Once the lillies die, I'm totally lost. Too much lake to be searching in my crappy little boat. LOL
