• Match Cost: $20.00 (Safety Officers of the day: NO CHARGE)
• PSC operates a "Cold" Range. No guns will be loaded except when at the firing line and ready to shoot.
• If shooting a carbine/rifle match, you must bring the gun in a case. If you have a single point sling, or similar tactical type sling which allows the muzzle to point down when hanging, you can rig up in the Safety Area and move from stage to stage slung with the muzzle down and a chamber indicator in the action. Standard hunting type shoulder slings are not permitted for movement from stage to stage and you will need to keep the gun cased when not at the shooting line.

What you will need to participate in IDPA matches:
• A "Safety First" Attitude; willingness to learn; and respect for the SO's donating their time.
• A reliable service-type pistol or revolver.
• A concealable belt holster that allows ease in drawing and reholstering.
• At least three loading devices(i.e. magazines or speed loaders), more is better.
• A pouch for your spare magazines or speed loaders
• 150 rounds of ammo
HAT, EYE AND EAR PROTECTION REQUIRED.
• Cover garment. (Vest, Jacket, etc.)

[smile] For New Shooters:
PSC welcomes new comers interested in IDPA. If this is your first time shooting an IDPA match, please let us know at registration and also identify yourself to the Safety Officers at each Stage as a NEW shooter. He/she will respect you for your honesty and this will allow him/her to be more alert to your inexperience and help guide you. Approach the match with the mindset that this is an opportunity for you to learn and DON'T RUSH! No one is going to remember next week or next month how well you shot, but I GUARANTEE they WILL remember you if you muzzle them, forget to keep your finger out of the trigger guard, forget to place the safety on, or you have a negligent discharge.

We encourage new shooters to visit our website and watch the video, "Beginner's Guide to Shooting Competitions-IDPA". This will provide those unfamiliar with IDPA a better understanding what to expect at the match. For a more throrough understanding of the rules, you can view the IDPA Rule Book on the Official IDPA Website.

New Shooters interested in shooting IDPA or Steel Challenge:

With such a strong interest in IDPA and Steel Challenge these days, it seems prudent to get some basic info out there to those shooters who may have some experience shooting a pistol or revolver, but not shooting in a match. So here is some basic advice in order to prepare yourself before shooting in your first IDPA or Steel Challenge Match. Remember, we were all once in your shoes, so no one is going to be critical of your performance unless it is a safety issue. Trust me, you will be a far worse critic of yourself than anyone else at the match.

I think all will agree the best advice is to spend some time with an instructor or experienced shooter before a match. They can explain the safety procedures, precautions and rules of the match. Some of the most friendly and helpful people I have ever met, have been at the shooting range and almost any experienced shooter will go out of their way to provide guidance and advice to those who ask. Now if you can't get to an instructor or experieinced shooter, don't dispare, there are lots of other resources out there to help you.

Now obviously, you will need to be familiar with your firearm, and demonstrate safe handling skills and muzzle control. We all have egos to some extent, but don't be embarassed when you identify yourself to the Safety Officer (SO) as a NEW shooter. You are at the beginning of a pretty steep learning curve and the SO will respect you for your honesty and it will allow him/her to be more alert to your inexperience and help guide you.

It's all about safety in this arena and we always, always practice the four cardinal rules of gun safety that must be adheared to at all times:
  1. The Gun Is Always Loaded!
  2. Never Point A Gun At Something You're Not Prepared To Destroy!
  3. Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It!
  4. Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Your Sights Are On The Target!

As mentioned before, spending some time with an instructor is the best advice, but if that isn't available you can take some time over the next couple of weeks before the match to do some "dry fire practice". Do a search on YouTube for "Handgun Fundamentals" including the name of any of the well known instructors like, Dave Spaulding, Rob Pincus, or Max Michel and you will find a reliable source. With the gun and mags absolutely empty and no ammo in the same room, practice drawing, presenting and reholstering the gun. Do this in front of a mirror, and start out in slow motion, making sure you do not "muzzle" any part of your body and your finger does not enter the trigger guard till on target. When reholstering, TAKE YOUR TIME. There is never any rush to reholster at a match. As you become more comfortable drawing & reholstering, start working with your cover garment. You'll be surprised how the cover garment can get in the way and affect your draw & holstering.

Now with the gun still empty, work on mag changes. Keep in mind, although you may see videos of professional shooters do mag changes with the muzzle pointed upward, at PSC and most ranges in the congested Northeast, that is not acceptable. The muzzle needs to stay pointed downrange at the berm.

If your handgun has a safety, make sure you are in the habit of verifying the position of the safety when you're done shooting and before you holster. While performing these drills ALWAYS be aware of the muzzle.

After you've practice these drills WITHOUT LIVE AMMO, till it feels almost second nature, if you have access to a range, by all means, get out and shoot. Having manipulated the firearm empty will make you feel more comfortable but don't become complacent. Start out slow and diliberate. Try loading the mags with only 1-3 rds, shoot to slide lock, do a mag change, and repeat. Always, always, always keep your finger out of the trigger till you're on target and always be aware of the direction of your muzzle. This is all very general practice advice and cannot replace real training with a properly qualified individual, but if you educate yourself and approach this with the proper mindset, you can be safe and participate in a wonderful pastime.

Pioneer Sportsmen Club welcomes all who want to shoot safely and at these matches you will not meet a more helpful or friendly group of people.

XTAV750,

Great question and thanks for asking. Yes, we are in fact planning on a Classifier. Last I heard they were thinking about the July match, but there was discussion about combining it with a regular match so those who need to classify could do that, but those who just want to shoot a regular match could do that instead. They're still considering the logistics, and I will post an update as soon as we have something definative.

That's great. Thanks for the answer. I was hoping for another shot at it before the NER.

WeedWhacker,

We're going to either construct a prop with the same dimensions as a 55 gallon barrel or find one of those cardboard barrels used for drygoods. If you have any ideas feel free to pass them along.

If you take a blue plastic barrel and cut the top and bottom off, it is no longer a barrel it is a blue cylinder...

Just a "bump" to remind everyone about Pioneer Sportsmen's IDPA Match this Saturday! Hope to see everyone there!!

Thanks to all the shooters who came out today! We had a great time hosting and hope everyone had as much fun as we did. Kudos to Steve for his "House" design. It was a nice twist on a familiar stage and a blast to shoot! Bill did a great job creating some interesting angles on "The Wall" stage and Walt put his creative flair to good use on Stage 4. The infamous "Plate Stage" proved to be a little more challenging than what we have come to expect from just a rack of plates, and we probably don't need to mention Stage 1, the "standards CoF". Thank you all for your enduring patience on that one. (It was a lesson well learned.)

Keep an eye on this thread, your inbox, and our website as we hope to have the scores out within the next couple of days. Also, don't forget our next match on Sat. June 16th! [smile]

A Big Thank You to all the folks at this event yesterday. It was my First IDPA match, and one of the most enjoyable matches I have ever shot. I will be back for sure. You folks run a great match. Thanks again.

Results to the May 19th Match have been sent out and can also be found here. Although there were several other matches in the area that day, we still had a respectable 40 shooters participate with 3 competitiors opting to shoot the CoF twice. Once again, thanks to all came out to share the day with us!

Excellent! Some of us have been gettting together on Tuesdays around 3:30pm till dusk for some informal practice. It's a great opportunity to introduce new IDPA shooters to the sport and give some guidance as to what to expect at a match. We'll setup a stage or two and just go through them a couple times. It's really helpful in relieving some of the anxiety associated when you first start attending IDPA matches. It's also not just for new shooters. Last night we had 5 or 6 of us and there was only one less experienced shooter. It's just a nice relaxed time shooting with a great bunch of people.

If anyone is interested in joining us, just PM me.

Here are the scores from the July IDPA match.... Enjoy. Don't shoot the messenger.

For all you shooters making plans for this weekend and not shooting the New England Regionals, why not plan to come shoot at our local match this Sat. Aug. 18th!! We're planning on 5 stages. If you've been sitting on the fence wondering what IDPA is all about, come on over! We'll show you what it's all about in a safe and welcoming atmosphere!

Not yet. Please bear with us as our regular data entry and scoring guru was away this weekend attending a Todd Green shooting class. Hopefully we'll get them up in a couple days.

A big "Thank You!" to all the shooters who showed up today to participate in our 5 stage match. The weather was perfect and the lines were relatively short. Our brilliant statistician guru is back on the job and as he was packing up to leave the range this afternoon, he had 3/4 of the scores sheets entered. So expect them to be posted a little more timely this time.
It has been decided, our October 20th match will be a Defensive Carbine Match. There will be rimfire and centerfire categories. So dust off the AR's, AK's and Lever Actions and plan to join us for a match with a different twist. More details will be posted in a few days.

I've emailed the scores from today's match but just in case the email hampster is on vacation here they are again.

We will not be hosting an IDPA Match in the Month of November. Thanks for all your support and we look forward to seeing everyone next Season!!

While I was not part of the safety committee, Pioneer has removed all their plastic barrels as props. This was due to two ricochet incidents, one which required a trip to the hospital. We have also witnessed cases where a bullet entered the barrel and spun inside it. There is concern that it could exit through another bullet hole, port cutout, handle cutout, missing top etc. So the thought was other than carefully placed steel, other objects downrange should be more penetrable.

This was not an easy decision and certainly created a lot of discussion. The decision enabled us to continue our action pistol programs and keep our bays open. Don't be surprised if you see more clubs doing the same. Nothing in the IDPA rules specify the dimensions of the barrel or the material it should be constructed of.

Did the incident requiring a hospital trip occur due solely to a barrel or did the bullet strike something else?
