As you may have heard already, Appleseed has a new Rifleman Patch that can be earned only in real winter conditions:

http://www.appleseedinfo.org/winterseed.html

Well, we got your winter conditions right here:

Enfield, NH, Jan. 15-16, 2011 (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=19140.0</td><td>)

And here:

Pelham, NH, Jan. 22-23, 2011 (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=18529.0</td><td>)

AND [FANFARE] HERE:

Peterborough, NH, Feb. 19-20, 2011 -- THIS IS A SPECIAL SHOOT. SEE THE MESSAGES ABOUT IT HERE IN THIS THREAD.

These shoots separate the truly heroic Appleseeders from the summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. Winterseeders who take these opportunities to test their equipment and their skills in actual winter conditions know they deserve the new patch when they get one.

Here is a good thread discussing cold weather equipment to ask Santa for:

http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=4527.new#new

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

Thomas Paine, writing in 1776

GOOD QUESTION

Are they retroactive? I earned mine in February in Athol a couple years ago with 2 feet of snow on the ground :)

Dixidawg,

I was there when you did it. That was a great shoot. You are the first to ask that question around here (New England). I will see what I can do.

No worriies. It was a great shoot! Anyone contemplating going to one of these should NEVER let a little snow discourage them. Put your mat down and you can actually use the snow to make it more comfortable. :)

ELBOWS IN THE SNOW

There is nothing more satisfying than elbows in the snow.

When I have my wool winter hunting suit on, I don't even use a mat in the snow anymore.

Some mats that are great on hard packed gravel, like those slick, padded gym mats, are too slippery in the snow. The carpet mats are snow-friendly, though.

I know now that you weren't exactly losing sleep over this, but for the record, Fred answers, "Awarding the patch is an immediate recognition for shooting a rifleman score; therefore, it does not get awarded retroactively for some prior score.

"In fact, you don't win a rifleman badge every time you shoot a rifleman score - you only win it once. But if you want to win a "Winterseed version" in addition to the original version, simply shoot your score under Winterseed conditions."

And now we know.

PETERBOROUGH, NH, 2011

There is a shoot scheduled for Feb 19 &20 on the Monadnock Rod & Gun Club's calendar, but it not listed on the RWVA website or here.

Did something fall through in the planning stages ?

I was planning on instructing.

Now that conflicts have been resolved, all four 2011 dates for Peterborough have been submitted to the Appleseed schedulers, and will be posted here as soon as they schedule it.

The Winterseed date, Feb. 19-20, that Dennis is referring to is going to be something special, because we have a sponsor who will be providing something amazing to keep us warm.

Stay tuned!

PETERBOROUGH, NH, FEB. 19-20, 2011, WINTERSEED SPONSORED BY KIFARU INTERNATIONAL

Kifaru International is sponsoring February's Winterseed shoot!

Kifaru is USA manufacturer of custom survival equipment for back country hunting and winter camping (http://www.kifaru.net/).

To keep us all warm, they are donating the use of their one-of-a-kind, 24-man heated tipi! You have got to see this thing. It has miniature stove with a smokestack that goes through the "roof." It heats the interior to t-shirt warmth, and you can cook on it.

Kifaru will also have catalogs for all their other stuff. The catalog is also downloadable from their web site.

Andy_in_NH, a former US Marine mountain warfare instructor, will be on hand instructing at the shoot. If students are interested, he has offered to teach some basic winter survival techniques.

Appleseed instructors will be sleeping in the Kifaru tipi overnight. You can, too, if you have the proper sleeping gear. If you are ready to rough it, please PM Andy_in_NH for a reservation and further information.

Monadnock Rod & Gun, Inc. (MRGCI) has graciously offered to open their kitchen for both days of the shoot. Not only will there be lunch available for a small fee, they will be cooking breakfast, too! The kitchen opens at 7:30 AM.

Wherever you wake up, please consider eating a low fat, high protein meal to start the day. Protein is the primary fuel that runs the body's heat engine. Protein also results in a long, slow, steady burn, whereas fat and sugar burn off too soon.

To maximize your protein intake while minimizing the bulk in your stomach (that you'll be lying on), I recommend egg white omelets. Egg white is an albuminoid, which is 100%, 24-carat protein. I have 4-5 egg whites and add some salsa to spice it up. Then I'm good and warm until late afternoon.

Maybe Andy has another way to prime the body for a cold spell?

Enfield, NH, Jan. 15-16, 2011, WINTERSEED After Action Report

SUMMARY: We had a great shoot! First, we had lots of fresh, powdery snow. The shooters were a hardy bunch that wouldn't give up. Sounds like New Englanders to me. Three out of eight shot Rifleman, an admirable tally.

Shoot Boss: Firewall99
Instructors: Freestater

Riflemen Made: 3
Riflemen Made Ratio: 37.5%

Day 1 Weather: Sunny and really cold (-8° F), no wind
Day 2 Weather: Variable and slightly warmer, with flurries, no wind

Good 1: Our shooters showed a huge improvement (100-500%!) as evidenced by the Redcoat target scores:

Saturday Score Sunday
AM PM AM PM
0 0 No Hits 0 0
0 3 3 Hits @ 10 4 5
0 2 3 Hits @ 20 2 3
0 1 3 Hits @ 300 1 1
0 0 3 Hits @ 400 1 1
1 0 HS 2 1
0 0 Cleaned Target 0 0

{Sorry the above table won't display properly. This forum software seems to think that my carefully placed spaces are evil, and it strips them out. Trust me, we had a lot of improvement.}

Good 2: We had three Ruger factory workers on board, at least one of whom actually worked on the 10/22 line. We had a useful and informative exchange of views regarding the manual bolt release and the (ahem!) factory sights.

Good 3: There was no wind! (Thank you, Lord.) Amazingly, the cold was not an issue.

Good 4: We had a classic, Appleseed-approved Saturday. We completed the complete course, all three strikes, and 4 AQT's. On Sunday we ran drills and Rifleman pickup, where everyone got to shoot someone else's rifle and learn that you can't miss fast enough and that only hits count.

Bad 1: Those Ruger factory sights were hampering three shooters who could never get their sights zeroed.
Solution 1: Tech Sights (TechSights.com) or a fixed magnification scope of no more than 4x.

There is still plenty of room on the line for the Pelham shoot this weekend. If you think you're tough enough to shoot in a little cold and snow come on out.

Keep your hydration up. Sipping from a thermos of hot chocolate or soup broth is a good way to do this.

Also, have a bag of GORP or another similar snack on you that you can continuously "graze" from. This will keep you metabolism moving and producing heat.
