Holiday memories will include new guns gone awry for two brothers who were visiting their parents in Loveland on Saturday. One brother accidentally shot himself in the thigh and hit his brother in the calf.
Darrin Barney, 21, and Ryan Barney, 27, both Wyoming residents, bought matching .40-caliber pistols in Cheyenne on Thursday, said Loveland Police Sgt. Phil Metzler.
They took the guns apart to clean and oil them. One brother was able to put his back together and pulled back the slide, apparently not realizing the clip automatically put a bullet in the chamber, Metzler said.
When the second brother couldn't reassemble his gun, the other offered to take apart the loaded weapon to show him. He released the slide and pulled the trigger, hitting himself and his brother.
Metzler was not sure which brother pulled the trigger.
They were taken to Mc Kee Medical Center in Loveland for treatment, but neither wound was life-threatening.
The guns were properly licensed, and the shooting was an accident, so no charges will be filed, Metzler said.
