Picked this up on GunBroker for use as a loaner rifle in my WW2 group. Since they started charging sales tax, GunBroker isn't much of a deal anymore, not that it ever really was. Advertised as an ex-Ethiopian. Was already cleaned (externally) of dirt and goat droppings. Stock is an ex-Turk though. Nonmatching. Bore was dark and dirty, but bore foam, brass brush, jag, and bore snake revealed an average bore. Passed the field gauge test. A few dummy rounds loosened the action. Didn't feel the need to demount the stock or do a detail strip.

Rifle came with a VZ24 sight hood. I added a German one as well as a cleaning rod and reproduction sling.

1943 is the bnz SS contract year. Many fake ones out there. Some had runes and some didn't. But NO SS contract rifle EVER had a suffix; easy way to tell. So this 6615h is NOT SS.

Bore had some pitting; hope it cleans up a little better.

Very nice.

How does one tell the difference between a VZ24 hood a German one?
Not to derail the thread, but are there any Mauser front sight tools you particularly recommend?

Someday I'll add a First World War Mauser...

Here and these. Snap ring pliers. Back in the day, I made my first set by Dremeling smooth a set of belly-ring pliers.

WW1 getting harder to come by. Now $1000 plus.

Two Gew98s here. Top is a 98M or post war modified. Newly developed K98k rear sight added. Originally a 1916 Mauser Obendorf. Rebuilt 1935-6 with a Danzig finger groove stock, blued bolt. Mismatched. 1920 Weimar inventory stamp. Sent as aid to Franco Spain in 1937.

Other; matched as repaired 1916 Danzig Gew98. Have had this since February 1999. Saxon 1917 depot repair on butt plate. Matched action and metal dropped into a previously used stock.

I had forgotten about that! I've looked at a few M95s, but have yet to "pull the trigger." That's nice that it's got the clip, too.

RTI carbines $400. Their long rifles are only available in 8.50.

I missed the window when these where cheap , well cheap enough to buy because I have some ammo for it.
$400 is to much right now.
My pay had not kept up with the increases in old rifle prices

Solid Steyr Tim. I still have to get a Steyr, BSW and and Erma to have all of the factories. That has been on the back burner though as I keep getting pulled into the G/K43 direction. I have 11 of those now. Hope all is well Tim!

Can you still get ammo for these? That’s a good price (relatively speaking...)

Everything is In Relatively short supply. I have 3 new boxes of PPU from a year or so ago. I checked one place and they didn’t have any.

So I break down and go to buy a Carcano carbine and they're sold out. Just as well. In a few days, they'll discover another box anyways.

Well, I ordered a Carcano. Cheap enough ($223.67) and keeps an Italian in the collection. Passed on $40 hand select bore and $50 1918 date or before. Supposed to be NRA VG/E. Already have enblocs and ammo. Supposedly from Italy and NOT Ethiopia.
