Ruger SR 1911, you can get it for around $700, amazing gun
I voted with my wallet just back in November. I bought a Sig Sauer TTT at Four Seasons for what I think was a reasonable price. I looked at the Ruger SR1911 and S&W E-Series as comparison.
Sig has the squared slide profile which makes them look like all other handguns except for other 1911's, but which makes it hard to find perfect-fitting holsters.
The Sig came with night sights standard, which you have to move up to a more-expensive model from S&W to get.
The Rugers are less expensive, but you don't get what you don't pay for. No checkering. No night sights. Good basic 1911.

I am looking at a S&W e1911sc. trying to find one and funding
Being a Newb, with the 1911's, I was looking for an entry level model that was historically accurate and mechanically reliable without a hefty price. The historical accuracy was a big factor for me. I chose a Kahr Auto Ordnance 1911A1. Pretty close to the GI A1. I put 150 rounds of 230 gr. JRB through it the first day, and it ran great! Not one single glitch. Nadda, zero, zip. And that was with the factory mag and WWB ammo. In fact the trigger felt a little stiff and the slide release was very tight, but as I shot it, everything just smoothed out. Very pleased!
