why does a civilian need a 30 round mag?

I have said it before, why do police need AR-15's and 'hi-capacity' magazines? Because they are worried about criminals. As most crimes are not against the police... it only follows that I need the same gear waiting for the police to show up when the same criminal (that the police NEED those things to protect themselfs) attacks me and/or mine.
