In the 1850’s New England completely dominated industrial production. In 1860, 12% of all the cotton cloth produced in the world was made in Lowell, alone.

The declining cost of steam power after the Civil War let everyone else in on the act.
 
The video at Springfield Armory NHS claims, with considerable justification, that they were the first to have firearms with interchangeable parts.
