16" AR for High Power

Is it pointless to try shooting high power matches with a run of the mill AR with a 16" barrel? I know what is recommended but would it be too frustrating to try and score with a 16"?

I wouldn't think so. Just know your carbine well and you should be ok.

It would definitely be a challenge with such a short sight radius, but do-able.

Just make sure your rear sight is like the A2's with easily adjustable windage and elevation or else you will just be wasting ammo for no return

I did 200-yard CMP matches for years with a 16" and factory FMJ. Got to NRA Sharpshooter before I upgraded to a 20". Go for it!
Did one across-the-course 200/300/600 yard match, too. (not mil-surp ammo!)

It will be a challenge. Consider replacing your front sight post with a thinner, national match front sight post.
