I am building a 14.5" upper with a mid length gas system. from online stores they say that you need to use the triangle end cap with the specs I have vs. the round end cap.

Whats the differences with the caps? seems like a simple piece of metal I know they have different diameters and need the right diameter.

I am going to run a magpul moe mid length handguard, was not sure how that would match up with the triangle end cap.

anyone have some insight on this?

Thanks.

There is no difference for the gas system regarding the caps.

The caps are dictated by which handguard you are using. If it needs a triangle vs a round, you'll know.

Ok cool. I was sitting here thinking the magpul hanguard wouldnt work with the triangle cap.

Weird the sites say mid lengths "need a triangle cap"

I haven't seen that, but I'm going to free float my mid-length, and I'm doing a 16 or 18" barrel on that build.

Hmmm... I have mid-length Magpul hand guards on one of my AR's and I installed a round end cap with no problem.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think (so, don't quote me on this), you might be able to install either one.

Simple solution... get both and see what works.

They're inexpensive parts, and what doesn't work you can throw in your spare parts bin, or karma out.

ETA: From Brownells...

I would think its because of the availability of handguards that interface with them. Midlength might be an oddball size.

You're fine with that setup.

If you look under the "Specs" tab, you'll find:

Just pulled mine out to look (Midlength 16"), and mine's triangular, which was a slight surprise. Wasn't the triangular cap from the M16A1, and the round came out with the M16A2?
