Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) was not at the Congressional baseball practice when a committed leftist attacked, but watching the toll paid by colleagues who were there reminded him that Americans must be armed for self-defense.

Collins did not seek to diminish the bravery and sacrifice of the police who were present at the baseball field nor those who responded after reports of shots fired. But he did seek to remind Americans that self-defense is a personal responsibility.

Writing in the Chicago Tribune, Collins said:

When I hear concerns from loved ones, friends and constituents fearing for our safety, my instinct isn’t just to rely on law enforcement. Capitol Police officers were heroes last week — their bravery and quick thinking probably saved the lives of [Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA)] and my other colleagues — but self-defense is my responsibility, too.

Chelsea Handler has blasted the “gun lobby” and issued a renewed call for increased gun control measures days before the talk show host is set to be honored at the anti-gun Brady Center Bear Awards Wednesday night.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter this week, Handler said she believes President Donald Trump loves the “gun lobby” and “doesn’t give a sh*t about people.”

In fact, Handler contends that Trump “doesn’t care about anybody.”

Pennsylvania Rep. Jamie Santora (R-163) defended his legislation outlawing private gun sales via the implementation of universal background checks during the May 30 airing of Whatever It Takes with Curt Schilling.

On May 28, Breitbart News reported that Santora wants to ban the private sales that Americans have enjoyed since the Second Amendment was ratified in 1791. His vehicle for doing this is an expansion of background checks wherein private gun sales are equated with retail gun sales, thereby forcing a law-abiding co-worker to seek out an agent of the state, fill out paperwork, and get permission–i.e., submit to a background check–before buying a gun from a co-worker. The bill would also mandate that a law-abiding friend seek out an agent of the state, fill out paperwork, and get permission before buying a gun from a law-abiding, lifelong friend. Fellow hunters would have to do the same: seek out an agent of the state, fill out paperwork, and get permission before a gun could be sold hunter to hunter.

A report from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) shows the demand for concealed carry witnessed its greatest surge ever between May 2016 and May 2017.
The number of permits nationwide has now surpassed 15 million.

That means more than 15 million law-abiding Americans have permits to carry a gun every day for defense of their own lives and the lives of others. And that 15 million-plus does not include the untold number of residents who legally carry without a permit in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming, and West Virginia.

According to Fox News, the CPRC reports that there were 14.5 million permit holders in May 2016. There are approximately 15.7 million now.

On May 3 gun control proponent Gabby Giffords joined Democrat lawmakers on Capitol Hill in pledging to fight efforts to nationalize concealed carry for law-abiding citizens.

By opposing national reciprocity, Giffords and lawmakers like Senator Chris Murphy (D) are literally working against citizens who have received some level of firearm education and/or training, and have undergone background checks for their permits. This comes even as Giffords’ gun control group is demanding background checks as a way to know who should and should not be able to own a gun.

According to Newsweek, Giffords spoke at a press conference Wednesday, saying, “Stopping gun violence takes courage. We must never stop fighting.… The nation’s counting on you.” She took up a campaign for background checks just two years after an attacker shot her with a gun he acquired via a background check.
