    Default lowest cost assault rifles?

pondering this for fun and plinking, but realistically about SHTF as well. I saw a Keltec SU16 recently and it had me thinking about low cost rifles that accepted military magazines and ammunition.

any recommendations? I sold my SAR to register the motorcycle and now, I consider that vacancy to be a big one. The SU16 is on my list as is the lower cost M*P Sport rifle and the AK-74 variant in 5.56x45.
Gen 3 Glock 23, 2 prebans, 2 10 rounders, for sale $700 or trade for HK USP/P2000, or QUALITY DA SA .40 pistol - don't care if its full size, I like carrying full sized firearms. Will take cash+ trade for the 4006 and or similar.

Also - have a Seiko Watch, motorcycle chaps and jackets in classifieds - trade for some AR mags/ammo?

I had an SU16 and was disappointed enough with the accuracy that I sold it. The M&P 15 is a good rifle for the money.

Neither of which, are of course, assault rifles.

I've had the M&P sport model for about a year with 5-600 hundred rounds through it.
A really fun gun and its been a good way to become acquainted with the platform.

Doesn't matter. Assault rifle is as meaningless a label as fascism.

Maybe they are not by "our" definition, but to the rest of the country who aren't knowledgeable in firearms, that is exactly what they are. If it looks evil and killy, accepts high cap mags, and is in a military caliber, then the term is acceptable. Besides, we ALL know what the heck he meant.

I choose to accept and embrace the term "assault rifle." The longer we quibble over media assigned semantics, the less time we spend on the sport (because lets face it, shooting things is fun) and protection of the second amendment.

that and well, assault rifle is a lot easier to say than "military patterned autoloder that accepts high capacity ammunition feeding devices."

I just call it a "rifle."

This. Calling it an "assault rifle" is just dumb.

Here we go with all of the semantics trolls, instead of just helping the guy when we all know what the hell he is asking about. Oh noes, he said "assault rifle", or "clip"! Let's just bash him on semantics!
