I liked the video. My observation is that in the second part numerous stabs and slashes were inflicted...but they were using rubber knives so the impact of the wounds were not reflected in the exercise. I think in a knife fight the first one cut bad has to statistically be the loser.

My reaction would be to run away.

That's why the obvious solution is to shoot the guy before the knife comes out.

I'm only half joking, too.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

If you are carrying a weapon, you need to be prepared for the senerio where an armed attacked is on you before you get to your weapon.
Can you get to your weapon while defending yourself from an attacker?
Can you defend yourself without your weapon long enough to get, clear and make ready your weapon?
Can you use your weapon once you've made it ready?

Yes, rule number one of surviving an armed confrontation is don't get in one, but it's still critical to develop skills to prepare for the eventually that you will.

At a range of 7'-10' an attacker armed with a knife will likely be able to close and grapple with you before you can clear a gun

I agree that a gun would be the prefered weapon, however depending on the skill, proximity, and element of surprise the attacker has on you. a gun wouldnh't necessarily be the best option. you have to remember that you are the weapon, the gun or knife is just a tool to help get an advantage and should only be used when it's adventagiouse or it will be more harm than good.

As for the video, the first part was some good wing chung style knife defense/striking defense which can work if practiced in application (saved my friends life two months ago when a bum tried to stab him) the later is premeditated fighting, which is more like what you'd get from two drunk guys pissed off at eachother/ bar fight/school fight.

you need basic principles to fight effectivly, just rumbling on the ground wont get you there, but just practicing kata wont either, bit of both aswell as middle ground sparring is a good mix

Good response gentlemen very observant.
The message of this vid wasn’t a knife is a better weapon then a gun, and the message wasn’t that if you are aware you won’t get stabbed, or this way is better then that. The 10 min message was meant to show how some react when in close quarter range, desperate, willing, and experienced to do what it takes to get over on you. the vid was not to provoke woulda, shoulda, coulda thinking, but to question whether you should perhaps investigate or prepare for such an event.
BTW these guys were not just rumbling on the ground. Both guys are experienced purple belts in BJJ and veterans to MMA fights , and yes we seek to be rounded combatants, using H2H, blunt weapons, edged and firearm ready.

One of the videos I have (can't remember if it's Ayoob or someone else), points out that if you are being charged with a knife... the average attacker would be able to reach you with it in under 2 seconds or so from 25ft or so.

Even if you already had your firearm drawn and pointed on target, even a chest shot would give them ample time to jab you before shock/pain/death did it's job.

They recommended shooting to break the attackers hip which would cause an instant collapse of the attacker.

When in an appropriate training environment, it is recommended to train drawing while on the run, turning.. stopping and shooting on target.

Just thought I'd share what i've seen.

When I did a Blade seminar up in NH for Ayoob back in the late 90’s we covered this problem. Ayoob’s a good man.

You might be right if your victim lives with his head up its a$$.

Try that with someone who carries a gun, is alert and aware, and you probably won't live to tell about it.
