    Default Free Brass Issues?

Anyone see any issues with me giving away some used brass? I'm mostly concerned about any legal issues. I have gathered up some of my .223 and 5.56, .40, .44 Mag, .45 and .380. Not a lot, but thought I might as well give it away instead of letting it go into the bucket at the range.

Person has to have an appropriate LTC/FID for the type of shell casing. That's it. LTC is GTG, FID strictly rifle cases.

That is what I assumed, thanks. Karma coming soon.

Len - This is interesting. Where do you read in MGL that an FID only covers ammunition for the type of firearm that the FID itself authorizes?

This is one I missed, and given your track record, there is a very real chance it is indeed the case, hence my question.

I fully understand that you have to hold an LTC/FID to possess a single spent shell casing (piece of brass) in your hand in MA...that is the law. As a reloader myself, it is amazing (and depressing) how stupid the gun laws can be.

Rob, I don't know about case law, and I'm taking a bit more conservative approach than a strict reading of MGL for "safety sake". I realize that most all common handgun cartridges can be used in a counterpart rifle, but I know that most cops do NOT know that.

Also see this part of the LTC law C. 140 S. 131

    (a)
A Class A license shall entitle a holder thereof to purchase, rent, lease, borrow, possess and carry:
    (i) firearms, including large capacity firearms, and feeding devices and ammunition therefor
    (b)
A Class B license shall entitle a holder thereof to purchase, rent, lease, borrow, possess and carry:
    (i) non-large capacity firearms and feeding devices and ammunition therefor
Using the same "logical construct" that they use to say that merely touching a machine gun w/o a green card is a felony (life in prison) because the law that allows unlicensed people to handle guns does NOT say specifically that you can do that with full auto guns . . . it is not far fetched to see them use that with pistol ammo for FID holders, using the same illogic.

The word ammunition is missing from the wording under FID!

    C. 140 S. 129

    (6)
A firearm identification card shall not entitle a holder thereof to possess:
    (i)
a large capacity firearm or large capacity feeding device therefor, except under a Class A license issued to a shooting club as provided under section 131 or under the direct supervision of a holder of a Class A license issued to an individual under section 131 at an incorporated shooting club or licensed shooting range; or
(ii) a non-large capacity firearm or large capacity rifle or shotgun or large capacity feeding device therefor,
