MA Knife Carry Law
Okay, I'm officially lost on this. Does anyone know what is legal to carry on your person in MA? I have a Benchmade 551 Griptilian that has a blade that's almost 4" in length. Is this legal to carry around clipped to my pocket?
The actual writing of the law is just one big, gigantic run-on sentence. I'm not a lawyer, nor do I think I, a common citizen, should have to pay a lawyer to tell me what the law says.
From what I see from Googling it, it's a 2.5" restriction, which is ridiculous. I'm just curious if anyone really knows. Any suggestions on a carry knife (once we figure out what the law says)?

Rob, don't quote me on this or take my advice because there is a good chance that I am 100% wong because I don't have the time right this split second to research this further:
For fixed knives there is no legal blade limit.
Again, your folder is going to have a completely different law for it. But I think that knives iwth a fixed blade have no limit in MA. Could be wrong though, look into it.

no limit on blade length outside boston. 2 1/2 limit inside boston as an ordinance. no double edge blade allowed.

Oh, cool--so my Benchmade 551 is legal outside of Boston. I probably should have asked the Sgt. last night when he was fingerprinting me.
It was for my LTC application; don't worry! :P

I'm guessing there are other towns with a knife ordinance like Boston. I wonder if there's any way to find out which other than searching the laws of every town in the state.

Another thing to know about these ordinances is they're basically civil infractions, IIRC, not "misdemeanor" or "felony" class offenses. Basically, the LEO can probably get away with stealing your knife and giving you a fine, but I don't think you could be criminally charged even in the places that DO have such an ordinance. (someone can correct me if I'm wrong. )
