    Default NH comes in Last

    http://www.wmur.com/news/money/Study...7/-/index.html

    A new study on the generosity of Americans suggests that states with the least religious residents are also the stingiest about giving money to charity.
    <snip>
    The Northeast, with lower religious participation, was the least generous to charities, with the six New England states filling the last six slots among the 50 states.
    <snip>
    Of the 10 least generous states, nine voted for Democrat Barack Obama for president in the last election. By contrast, of the 10 most generous states, eight voted for Republican John McCain.
    I am really not surprised by any of this, disappointed but not surprised

    What is it about the term "Thirfty Yankee" doesn't everyone understand?

    one can still be thrifty and generous. Doing stuff like giving to organizations that use a greater percentage of proceeds to directly benefit the cause vs having 89% going to administration and advertising

    Thrifty is not incompatible with charitable.

    The study also found that tithing made up the majority of the disparity.

    I'm by no means religious, but I donate to many things...some here on the board. Pay it forward folks...only good can come of it.

    Telling. D'd give far less to charity then R's. They believe in helping out with OPM, through the state.

    The other side of the coin is that for the last few years New Hampshire has been either #1 or #2 healthiest state and the #1 or #2 state for the well being of a child. There is less demand for charitable services in New Hampshire therefore New Hampshire residents have less of a reason to donate to charity.

    Does this study only reflect charity that was reported to the IRS?

    Meh. Lower the tax rates and tone down the welfare spending and I'm sure lots of people will be more willing to open the purse strings and donate.
