    Default Close Call Today

Not gun related but still a close call.

We went to Cambridge today for lunch (All Star Sandwich shop) and managed to score a window seat. Watched some 20-something girl playing with her phone while crossing two different streets. I mentioned to the GF that we might just witness a vehicular homicide today. The girl crossed safely but not once did she look up or check for on coming cars.

Fast forward a bit, we're now on out way back home and passing through Malden. I see some guy on the other side of the road, standing in the cross walk, so I stop to let him go. He is watching me to make sure I'm stopped and starts out into the roadway. Only problem is that he never looks left and some idiot is flying down the road, in the other direction, oblivious to the fact that some guy is about to stroll out in front of his speeding car. It was like a slow-motion physics movie - I was doing the math to see if there was going to be a collision and if so, where was the body going to land. Luckily, at the last minute the kid in the walkway stops. The guy in the car missed him by less than a foot - I'm surprised he didn't get clipped by the side view mirror. The car guy slams on his brakes and looks like he just saw a ghost. The kid had on a set of headphones, not sure if he was distracted but it sure made our hearts skip a beat.
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” (Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764)

You wouldn't believe how many pedestrians get hit by cars every day.
I read these on the news alert pager all the time, but very few ever make the news.
I'm shocked by the increase in these incidents just over the last year or so.
Providence seems to have an exceptionally high rate of pedestrians getting nailed, and also hit & runs.

A very large number of self-absorbed people in Providence, especially the area east of Benefit St.

I'e had people on multiple occasions in Northampton step out into the road from between cars without looking. I hit the breaks, and they stand there for a minute and bitch and scream at ME because they walked into the road, well away from any cross walk, and never looked for traffic. The return gesture varies.

Yet my girlfriends brother gets killed by a bus, in a cross walk, with no phone, no headphones, minding his own business. Go figure......

Me and my boss were down in providence at the new career and technical high school doing a site visit, and as we were leaving school was just getting out. A group of kids just walked right out in front of us not in a cross walk, and staring us down as they slooooooowly walked across the street. I am not sure where the facility was, but it pissed me off.

Most people are horrible pedestrians, they do not pay attention, or think they have the right away against a fast moving 3000 pound plus vehicle.
