I'm impressed that JD was willing to pony up a little dough to help him change the logo.

Definitely a classy move and should show their good will in working with the author.

    Thanks for sharing!

Far less stick and far more carrot than we use. Wow. I hope it works.

it would cost the company far less to throw a few bucks the guys way to help him change the cover than it would for them to pay their attorneys to file all the paperwork to force him to change it.

Frankly, I could imagine a good argument that it would not be ruled infringement for the obvious satire/parody involved, but even if I am right, JD hastoprotect it's brand and is right to do so. Particularly in such a polite way.

Not really, USPTO related hearings are a lot cheaper than a full fledged court hearing, binding, and if a C&D doesn't work, needed to protect marks.

In my industry there are a couple of "luminaries" that do these often because they are a cheap (sub $10k for the cases I've seen) ways to jab at competitors to choke them out or scare them off.

I am super impressed that the company is willing to deal with the issue directly and correctly! instead of being sue happy and being unreasonable they did what a large company is supposed to do, be a real business...not to mention that looks like an actual signature!
