Why we will never have the "freedom" we think we deserve
I've been on NES for about 3 years now, the forum has gotten increasingly political in the past year or so. This is rightly so with the increases in the size and power of the government, the refusal of political leaders to stand up for ANYTHING for more than a few seconds.
We sit around and talk about freedom and how the government is taking it away. Everyone on this forum has their own idea of what it means to be free, some people want everyone to be able to do whatever they want. Others want freedom when it's convenient, while still others only want the freedoms they deem fit for society.
I think as a result of these various forms of thought is partially why idiots get elected to both state and federal politics. If a politician tells you they've got your back, then walks down the street and tells your neighbor they have his, what if you and your neighbor completely disagree? The politician doesn't care he got both of your votes because you like guns and he is anti-abortion or whatever other hot button topic of the day. How would someone like that ever be able to make wise decisions in a position of power?
And as far as people on the forum go, I'll read one thread where someone will say something that I read and think to myself "this is someone who really gets it, someone who understands limited government, freedom for everyone". Then a couple hours later that same person will make a post advocating the police harassment of someone because they disagree with their personal view of "freedom".
Seriously folks? If you want your view of freedom you have to be willing to understand other people want theirs. Whether it's Legalizing drugs, parties late at night, firearm ownership or unkempt grass, people each have their own view of what life is to be free. If you can't keep your nose out of other peoples business and let them live their life as they see fit so long as they don't DIRECTLY infringe on your personal liberties maybe you should leave them the hell alone? If everyone reciprocated this mindset and only infractions directly harming another individual were laws; we would have a much less corrupt government and a whole lot fewer infringements on all of our rights.
If we as a group of like minded individuals can't get our heads around what we believe it is to be free how the hell can the rest of this country? If you're not aware our country is full of and run by morons, you're probably one of them.
When a politician says he's fighting for the soul of our country, think of it like the devil saying he's got a deal for you if you just sign on the line.

Spoken like a libertarian. The only social difference between the Rs and the Ds is the specific aspects of life in which they tend to think "The role of govt is to force you to live your life the way I would if I were you".

Good rant. I'll give it a 7. Seriously. I'm of the same mindset.

Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and all the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called 'patriotism'. " - Kenny Powers

The rest of the country, and NES, most likely won't. These questions have been asked for thousands of years of human history, and there is no satisfying answer. Human kind oscillates between freedom and tyranny, and at any point we are either at peak tyranny, peak freedom, or somewhere in between. Throughout human history there has been no constant. The establishment of the US represented peak freedom. It has since been swinging the other direction. It won't swing back without a major disruption of the status quo, similar to the Revolutionary War.
All things change, utopia will not be reached, and a consensus on freedom and liberty won't be reached either. All one can do is live live to the fullest, live morally, live self sufficiently, and be ready for anything. Because anything is coming.

Ditto.
Although, I do find more overall libertarian mindset in the gun rights community than anywhere else, including the Big-L libertarian community.
OCDO is slightly better than NES, but NES is populated with more people who are struggling just to breathe; they're worrying later about breathing free.
