Viacom was pretty sleazy putting the scare stuff on the kids channels the day before the blackout. Both my kids came to me and told me to call DirecTV and have them 'Stop the Madness' - a Spongebob clip they cut into the scare ad.

A 30% increase is a little steep, in this economy; unless the last deal was cut at a discount to get their foot in at DirecTV.

Let them fight it out, my kids are watching less TV and no Mr Bad Dad for shutting it off - a win for me.

    Free Market at work.

Make your decision, pass on your decision to Direct TV (your vendor) and let it work itself out.

Unless Direct TV starts losing customers because of a lack of viacom programming, they have no reason to really negotiate with Viacom.

DirecTV sucks. (I had them for about 10 years before I finally gave up on them, so I have some experience in this regard.) Run away, run away.

I'd be willing to bet their contract allows them to remove "free" channels from the lineup without triggering the ability of customers to terminate their contracts.

    Rob,

I'm sure it does. DirecTV would be stupid not to make sure their contracts do not allow a customer to void the service contract because of a line-up change in a package. My point is, until customers start leaving DirecTV because DirecTV can not provide viacom programming, DirecTV has no real reason to negotiate with viacom. The only value viacom brings to DirecTV is increased customer subscriptions. If no one is willing to leave because viacom isn't available, viacom has nothing to offer DirecTV.

Viacom is selling DirecTV a product (programming). Viacom wants one price for it, DirecTV wants another price. Until one of those prices change, no deal is going to happen. Either the lack of revenue will force Viacom lower or risk of loss of customers will force DirecTV higher, but without the risk of loss of customers, there is no driving force for DirecTV to pay more.

I am more or less stuck with DirecTV - although I have no complaints, alot better than Charter at my last house.

I'm on a dead end road, at the end, and no Cable runs this far out. We also have all underground utilities at this end so it would be a major issue to get a cable up here.

I'm bundled with Verizon phone & DSL so the rates are low(ish).

Viacom must really be trying to hurt themselves with all these feuds. The feud with Netflix last year, Amazon, DirecTV now, what next? What of their unique programming is worth the headache really? They're setting the cable companies up to negotiate them down to the ground when their contract is up.

If you decide to look elsewhere for your TV service, consider whether you even need it or not. Between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon (having all three is still cheaper than a basic cable service) you can get a lot of content, and most networks put their shows on the internet at least for a short time after they air. Since most newer computers can support HDMI output, you can still watch all your programs on your TV.
