    Default dual sport bikes

i know there are quite a few riders on the forum, and recently i have had my interest rekindled in riding. I was curious as to what your experiences were with various dual sports!

    any insight would help.

Personally, I want a supermoto. Love the look of them.

From what I've been told by friends, dual sports don't do either well.

the supermotards look cool but im sure they ride poorly unless the whole machines suspension was reworked. couple friends of mine love the dual sports, one has a KLR650 that is great but im not looking for a machine that big, i have little guinea legs!

I have wanted a dirt bike for years! I'm guessing a dual sport bike is a street/dirt bike? I have not really looked into it aside from knowing that I need something around the 100 cc range to start with, lest I end up wrapped in a tree at 60 mph.

ETA : Something like a Honda CRF150, perhaps?

The CRF150 is pretty slow. You wouldn't even be able to hit 60. If I where you I would check out the CRF230 or TTR230 because 230s are not super fast but they provide enough torque for a full grown (beginner) man to ride one. Wouldn't be my 1st choice but it would work well for learning the clutch and the fundamentals or riding.

    Excellent, thanks!

To THESAW249, wasn't trying to thread-jack(although it was quite successful)... I remember seeing the dual sports before riding around when my cousin did motocross. Had to go look at them to remember, but he was saying that the dual sport versions are fine if you ride the same bike to the course as you do at the course, but anyone who is even remotely interested in riding for longer periods of time should "put the money out for a bike made for moto-x, or save your money to buy new knees". Not sure if that helps in any way, shape, or form.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

The 650's are heavy pigs in the dirt and the 250's are slow. Pick your poison. Personally I'd go with the 250 and avoid highway/highspeed traffic. Or jump past the 650's to the beemer twins.

Scarecrow, no worries brutha! it was a slight thread derail, but it had some good thoughts! no harm no foul the 650's are just too much machine, i would love a DRZ400 (idk if they make an on/offroad machine off that chassis). The 250's with a pipe, intake and the power commander sure put a smile on folks faces. This will be a re entry to riding for me, so frankly i dont mind if the bike is on the lower end of power. you can always make more with a cam etc (used to build quad and bike engines). besides it would be a great bike for my fiancee once she starts riding. Looking good and hard at the Yamaha WR250R.

I've had a Suzuki DR350S since 1990. Bike still running strong with only routine maintenance. For years I had it stripped of all road gear with a set of knobbies on it. I had a blast with that setup! Preferred it to my KX250 & 125
350 has enough power to have some fun, but it's not monstrously heavy.
