The World According to Monsanto
Just watched an interesting documentary, "The World According to Monsanto".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rml_k...layer_embedded
To summarize: its about the potential downfalls of GM (Genetically Modified) foods, and the apparent crony capitalism and dirty tricks that solidified its place in the market.

Story at-a-glance
- The World According to Monsanto explains how the biotech giant threatens to destroy the agricultural biodiversity that has served mankind for thousands of years
- Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup, has been deemed a major health hazard to the environment, and to animal- and human health. A French research team that has studied Roundup extensively has concluded it is toxic to human cells, and likely carcinogenic to humans
- A recent safety review, which determined that “the available literature shows no solid evidence linking glyphosate exposure to adverse developmental or reproductive effects,” was in fact funded by Monsanto itself

Thanks for posting. Did you hear about this business in Vermont? Vermont just wants food to be labeled if it contains GMO. Monsanto and their huge law budget is gonna sue them if they try it. Monsanto sued them in the 90s for this same labeling with milk... and won! Unbelievable.

did you know there used to be 1000's of varieties of corn - aside from the insipid yellow crap we eat at cook outs? Did you know that there used to be many colors of potatoes - purple, blue etc? Did you know the Dutch bred carrots to be orange for King Williem Orange over 400 years ago? (carrots used to come in as many colors as potatoes)
This is not new news, or at least it shouldnt be. Its pretty much too late. We are down to a handfull of vegetables, grains and flora that were naturally here. We have selectively bred our food supplies to be hearty, robust, and virtually devoid of any vitamins/minerals and taste. It all has to look the same, cook the same, taste the same so consumers in Oregon get the same spuds as the folks in Vermont. Supply chain and industrial farming at its finest. This also holds for live stock. If you were born after 1950 - chances are very very high you have never tasted grass fed, hormone free beef - if you stumble across gras fed beef - try it. It will blow your mind. Same goes for real deal eggs made from free range chickens - they taste like a dozen eggs in one. Same for real chicken, now that I mention it. Organic, free range, hormone free chicken - the white meat tastes like dark meat and the dark meat tastes like heaven. We've done it to ourselves.Last edited by Sir_Macadoo; 06-13-2012 at 12:40 AM.

Here is the "Penn and Teller: Bullshit" episode on organic foods. Its kind of an opposing viewpoint to the documentary I linked, if I recall correctly. From what I recall their argument was basically that GM foods and such are fine because it helps to feed more people. I'll have to watch again later to refresh myself.

productivity and yields are way up - so abundancey is not the issue any more. But at the expense of the diversity of the food supply.
The vast majority of what we eat is corn - from corn syrup used to sweeten everything, corn fodder for cattle and other feed stocks, and the raw corn we eat all the time. Most of our calories come from 1 single plant that has been engineerd to out survive all others.I just wish once someone would call me "Sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Monsanto is ****ing evil. They are buying up every seed company they can and killing off their product lines forcing everyone to buy their RoundUp Ready seed which then forces them to use their RoundUp herbicide or the crops will fail.
I love my country, but I fear my government.

I agree but why not label it and let the people decide if they want to be part of this massive science experiment or not. I personally am more concerned about pesticides on my food vs if it is GMO. Certain fruit and vegetables are more susceptible to retaining it than others (i.e. strawberries, spinach etc) so I buy organic for them.
I was talking to the cow farmer at the local farmers market and says that grass feed beef is tougher and more chewy so people don't often like it. What he does is give them a mix of various kinds of food besides corn. It's like the best tasting beef.
