Massport is sending a foam truck from Logan and my friend, a fire fighter at SubBase New London, has been recalled to head up to PNSY.
That's a billion dollar fire right there!

Hope your friend (as well as everyone else) stays safe. Report says a few firefighters may have been injured.

My B.I.L. is scheduled to retire next week, looks like he may have to stick around for a while to help fix the boat if I had to take a guess

This can't be good.
I got a pager alert on it, but it only said a ship on fire, didn't say it was a nuclear sub!

It'll be ugly and fighting that sort of fire has got to be terrible.
However, a boat in overhaul isn't fully manned, only a skeleton crew is usually on board at any one time and bulkhead doors between compartments are water (fire) tight, so the fire will be contained. The reactor is located in the middle-to-rear of the boat and usually all bulkhead doors are kept dogged shut between compartments. The word "nuclear" scares everyone, but the reactor compartment will be safe from this sort of disaster.
The last boat I worked on was the 688-class, so I'm not familiar with the layout of this boat, hopefully the Comms and Con are secured off from the affected area.
Repair of the damage (assuming a good-sized fire, not just a lot of smoke) will take a long time (think 1-2 years) and cost a ton of money!Mass. Gun Laws By and For Non-Lawyers (How To Stay Legal and Out of Trouble) - Seminar
