    Default California deficit

We all know that California is doomed. I was skimming an article about their current deficit situation today and, well, it's really worse than I thought.

My company has two offices in California. Today we were talking with one of our clients in the LA area and our key contact there was saying they were tightening the screws hard on education.

So for my own education I went to read about Governor Brown's new initiatives.

Let's start at a high level... Gov. Brown has a $16 billion deficit this year. That works out to about $425 per person... for a single year. But if you back out illegal aliens that number jumps... a lot. Oh, and it is worth mentioning that the estimates he made in January, 2012 are off by $16 billion dollars. Yup, in just a matter of months he's asking that we believe this is all new to him.

Then there's the cost of illegal aliens. Rumor has it California spends in excess of $1 billion each year housing illegal alien inmates. Yup, just on incarceration costs.

Then there's the costs of all the freebies for illegal aliens. These are estimates, but many believe the illegal population in CA is 3 to 4 million. How much does the state spend on health care, education, welfare and other costs for this HUGE population that, by definition, are law breakers.

So how will California address these problems? Here's there solution:

"For the last four years, California lawmakers have trimmed spending and temporarily raised taxes to combat deficits of more than $100 billion combined. Deeper cuts now threaten to shred safety nets for the poor, elderly and disabled, reduce subsidies to the state’s renowned universities and strain funding for public safety and schools. "

Anyone see anything in that statement about illegal aliens and the strain on the rest of us? Nope, I didn't think so. Instead they're threatening to reduce spending on education by $6 billion unless they get voters to agree to significant increases in taxes.

There is no solution, really, and that is the problem. When the water pouring into the row boat faster than the water being bailed out, the boat is gonna sink. It's just a matter of time. All they can do is spin it to the best of their abilities so they can be re-elected once again, and continue to f*ck up that incredibly messed up state.

It sounds like they've been getting their financial advice from Greece.

If they keep raising taxes the rich will leave - after all - they have the means. Then who would be left to pay any taxes at all? Chasing the tax payers into other states is not the solution. It will only make things worse. The spending cuts are necessary and don't go far enough in my opinion. They should start by requiring proof of citizenship for any entitlement program. That would be a good start. Then limit the number of years a recipient can collect welfare to 2 years (lifetime limit). If someone is already on welfare and has additional children - stop paying additional benefits. Finally the public sector needs to have its entire salary structure reformed. People working in the public sector should NOT be paid more than the folks who do the same job in the private sector - who also pay the taxes that pay their salaries.
That would be a start to getting them on the right track.

States that have taken on ludicrous pension systems for state workers and tried to "create jobs" with state hiring are all at risk of this if/when the debt markets finally figure out that ".gov" is not the invincible infinite money printing machine they lent to...

The trouble is they will be holding their hands out to the Feds and then threatening to shoot a hostage if they don't get bailed out...

It has already happened with the Fed's backing of banks covering Cali check kiting... The next phase won't be so subtle.

What a mess. Obviously the illegals aren't the sole cause of the problems, but it's clearly part of problem.

Maybe close the border and legalize drugs?
