NAS Miramar Squadron VAW116 aboard USS Forrestal (AKA FID) and USS Nimitz, E-2B radar operator, Avionics Tech 1976-1981. You're gonna love SERE School.

lipofsky, I was part of CVW17 on the FID, med cruise. 1978...small world.
If I remember correctly, VA81 lost their XO on that cruise. It was a sad day on that boat...then just a few days later they had another accident that claimed another aviator.

I had already gone to Flight Engineer School, left VA-81 in June of 77, finished school in Nov and went VP-45, went to Sigonella Sicily in Feb of 78. 78 was bad year for the Sunliners.

Yes it was...it's a dangerous job...There were several times I thought about turning in my AC wings...

We did alot of "bingos" to Sigonella in 78....While the Forrestal was in port there, myself and two other friends climbed Mt Aetna....a week later it had a small eruption and killed a number of people hanging around the active crater.
