    Default FIELD DAY 2010

OK, I have seen a lot of chatter about a NES try at field day. This thread is to coordinate that effort.

First we need to figure out what we want to do. This being our first FD (as a group) I think that it should be mostly a layed back event, i.e. we are not going to try to actually win, we just want to participate and have a social gathering. But, we need to figure out as a group what we want to do.

Then, we need to figure out WERE we want to do this, what class we want to enter (how many radios, what kind of electric power) and the list goes on.

I may update the OP as information comes in.

    /John

Just to get everyone up to speed who's never participated in a Field Day, here's the Official ARRL Field Day Package to give you a little reading.

I have a 100amp 12v PSU, and a Lambda with two 18amp 12v outputs, both of which I'll volunteer for our field day.

Depending on the date of field day this year I might also be able to provide a location as well if we're not going to incorporate a range day.

I know NOTHING about what goes on during a Field Day... So I'm in.

But do we want to do a trial run? Patio was talking on the air today about maybe meeting and talking to see what each of us can offer.

I'd be willing to put up my Mantown at my house for a meeting if people don't mind driving to North Attleboro.

    LOL. Awsome.

And I would go to your house but it will have to be on the weekend as that is a long drive for me....but also an excuse to go to Zero Hour Arms on the way.

Perhaps we should keep it simple and enter as Class A, so we can run generators instead of worrying about battery operation for 24 hours, and we won't be limited to 5 watts, which can be frustrating.

Here's the description for Class A:

(Class A) Club / non-club portable: Club or a non-club group of three or more persons set up
specifically for Field Day. Such stations must be located in places that are not regular station locations and must not
use facilities installed for permanent station use, or use any structure installed permanently for Field Day. A single
licensee or trustee for the entry is responsible for the group entry. All equipment (including antennas) must lie
within a circle whose diameter does not exceed 300 meters (1000 feet). To be listed as Class A, all contacts must be
made with transmitter(s) and receiver(s) operating independent of commercial power mains. Entrants whom for any
reason operate a transmitter or receiver from a commercial main for one or more contacts will be listed separately as
    Class A-Commercial.
BTW, here's the last Field Day I participated in back in '91. This is my station, 15 meter CW in a rented camper on top of Mt. Wachusett:

Antennas -- Are we going to stay with simple wire antennas or are we going to get a little more elaborate with portable towers? John, you mentioned something about towers in our conversation on Paxton?

I was thinking the same thing. Either 1A or 2A.
