Shield 40 converted to 9mm video
I think there is a thread asking about converting a S&W Shield 40 to a 9. It looks like it can be done ok. Probably good to get some 9mm mags and a barrel although the 40 mag seems to work. Here's a video.

This is a confirmed easy conversion...many others have done it...two guns for the price of 1 and 1/3.
However...the rub is S&W aren't selling shield barrels and none of the aftermarket companies are making them yet so it's unlikely this neat trick will benefit anyone for a long time.

Interesting to see the accuracy change with the different caliber.

Especially when you consider the 9mm barrel supposedly fits a smidge looser in the .40 slide than the intended barrel. So the 9mm in the .40 slide is more accurate than the .40 in the .40 slide. Just for giggles I'd love to see if the 9mm in the .40 is more accurate than the 9mm in the 9mm slide.
Or it could just be shooter error. Would have to be shot from a bench to really test it.

This video was posted for informational purposes. The Shield is a CCW gun and as such needs to be as close to 100% reliable as possible. If you intend to carry the Shield I would recommend that you only carry using the barrels designed for the carry gun.

Agreed...and I own one myself in .40 and would only carry it as a .40.
But pretty cool that if I wanted to also have it in 9mm to shoot the cheaper ammo or just wanted a change of scenery at the range I could effectively also own it for those purposes in 9mm for 1/3 to 1/4 of the price and just keep the 9 barrel and mags on hand.
Then again, as mentioned, for the time being you can't buy just a 9mm barrel from S&W so the point is moot anyway.

I range tested a Shield and I and again this is just my experience, just didn't like the fit and feel of the firearm. I had several failures to feed and stove pipes with various ammunition. I tested the pistol with Black Hills, Horandy as well as Remington and Winchester target ammo.
I know we all have handguns that fit our hand and just feel right but the shield for me anyway just didn't seem all that well made. I am in no way saying my single experience makes the firearm a poor choice but for me it just didn't feel right. I know its sounds weird.
One the other hand I shot with a fellow member at Holbrook who owns one and it functioned great and he loves it.
Me I will stick with my Kimber Raptor. granted far more $$$$ but I just love a 1911 sidearm.Comm2A Gold Sponsor
