Range Rule Violations...How do you deal with it?
Scenario:
You're at the range, which is a local private Club, of which you're a member. You've belonged for 5 years, but are not all that active. You hold no Committee chiars or offfice, you show up for work parties when you can, but are not a regular fixture. You're on a "nodding acquaintance" basis with some other shooters.
While alone on the 100-yard range, you clear your gun, turn on the "red light" and proceed down range (we'll say that the stated and posted range rule is "NO handling firearms when Red Light is on!" ) an older guy enters, whom you don't know. You turn from stapling your target, and see that he's got his rifle on a sandbag rest, on a bench, pointed in your general direction.
Obviously, he had to be handling it, as he and it were not there when you started your walk.
You get back to the line, and, say, "Excuse me, but I was downrange while you were handling that gun"
"It's OK sonny, I'm a Member here for years, and it's not loaded."
Vote to say what you'd do....
NOTE: Option 2 in the Poll - You're saying, "You're an idiot," to him.....Last edited by MisterHappy; 07-05-2012 at 09:16 AM.
If you pull a trigger, you have to pull together.

I would let him know in easily understood language that he is out of line and that what he did was an inexcuseable breach of safety.

#3 and if that does not appear to change his attitude, #1.

Agree with P-14 here.
Explain calmly and politely that:
It's a violation of the posted club rules
It's a violation of the 10 commandments of firearms safety
It's a serious breach of membership trust
It's a serious breach of safety
And if that doesn't appear to change the person's attitude, they merely brush it off or they continue to argue why it's ok for "them" to break the rules, take down their name and membership number and report them to club board or range safety officer, per the club's rules.

politely explain to him that his actions were against the rules and made you uncomfortable. No need to get pissy and yell or run and tell on him. If he was unreasonable after explaining the rules then go to the BOD.

First I'd go with a version of #2. I'd ask him:
"Do you know the exact percentage of people that were accidentally shot by guns that the shooter thought were unloaded?
I'd also report him to the BoD. Who knows whether or not the guy is losing it, or how many times he'd done it before. Let the BoD know quietly. Don't demand action.
They're the ones responsible for keeping the club running. If I was on the BoD, I'd want to know if any members were acting in an unsafe manner. Based on his response, he apparently thinks it's no big deal. It isn't until someone gets shot.
How pissed would you be if you were on the BoD, and this old guy shot someone, and then somebody like you says (or a couple of people say), "I'm not surprised this happened. A couple of months ago he was handling his guns while I was downrange."Last edited by EddieCoyle; 07-05-2012 at 09:40 AM.

You don’t have to be the world’s greatest badass to be a man, but you have to be willing to throw down when the time is right.

$100 says this guy is actually on the BoD himself.
It's NOT being a range Nazi to call someone on safety. Period. It's no longer Democrat vs. Republican. It's Freedom vs. Tyranny.
Both parties are currently well stocked with the Tyranny crowd.
Our question with any policy should simply be, "Does this make me more free or less?"Support Comm2A
