No Tomass, that's EXACTLY backwards... The Second Amendment isn't there so we can "take over" a tyrranical government. It's there so we can resist when the tyrannical government does things like subvert Freedom of Speech, tax us into poverty, incarcerate us without due process, censor the press, little things like that, and the other things in the Bill of RIGHTS".
A couple of Jefferson quotes are illustrative: "When governments fear the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny." And, "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
If you desire to TRULY understand the reason for the Second Amendment, read this essay. It may take as long as 7 or 8 minutes. Or, continue to be ignorant of the REAL meaning...

I have only recently begun to consider this topic (full credit to NES for waking me from my nap!) and I'm not yet fluent enough to stand a good argument; I hope, however, to see many more comments from NES'ers who are. Every chance to talk about this is a chance to bring more folks on-board. It's scary how easily and quietly we've been losing our rights.

Good article, with an interesting reference to the ninth amendment:
I've never seen this used in support of gun rights (or denial thereof), but it seems like a valid take.Anti-gunners often ask regarding an AR 15 or an AK-47, "Why would anyone want a gun like that? You cannot hunt with it." Even if that were true, the answer constitutionally is, "So what?" Truly, the Second Amendment is not about hunting or target shooting as a recreation. Arguably, those pastimes are protected by the Ninth Amendment which says that "The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."FREE Not Tom!!

Pretty popular article, with 62 comments. A lot of them are between some of the same people back and forth. It would be nice to see this good letter to the editor stay alive in the paper online with more positive comments..

The Constitution does not give us any rights. The author fails on that one fundamental point.
