From the article:
"UPDATE: This post initially said Venola's the current editor of Guns & Ammo. We've been told his biography was a little outdated, and he actually left the post a couple of years ago."

Yeah..okay so he was in the firearms publication business, why is this a big deal? Harlon Carter the late former head of the NRA was convicted of murder and later had the conviction overturned on a technicality. People who write about guns, shoot guns and work diligently in pro-2A movements are pretty much like anyone else, and can get in legal jams just like everyone else.
Since we do not know the circumstances surrounding the incident, we have to keep an open mind until it comes out in court. I think it is important not to make a rush to judgement either for or against him.Member, Gun Owner's Action League

Judge refused to lower bail, seems he is up on 2nd degree murder charges after shooting a friend while drunk.
I guess he missed the article about gunpowder and alcohol not mixing well

Mohave Superior Court Judge Steven Conn earlier this week rejected an argument by attorney Ron Gileo that the $100,000 bond for Richard Erick Venola was too high. Venola is accused of shooting and killing his friend, 39-year-old James Patrick O'Neill, after an afternoon of drinking at Venola's home in the 4800 block of Mayan Drive May 2.
According to court documents, Venola was described as highly intoxicated by authorities who responded to a call by a neighbor of shots fired. Venola's neighbor said Venola came over to his home carrying a gun and said, "(O'Neill) was going to the garage to take guns he wanted. I don't owe him anything so I got mad and shot him."
