There is always some type of stick lying around and it’s very easy to convert that stick into a sustainable weapon for self defense. There may be a time when using a firearm is not practical or even available.
If you are out numbered or maybe you are small or maybe you are a woman, using a basic stick maybe your only hope to make it. There are different types of stick’s used for different reasons. Short stick or palm stick for in close, arms length, and the long stick or staff. You should know all three and be able to utilize it in a variety of situation. Indoors or confined areas, poor terrain, slopes/mud/even water. All have very simple applications.
If your are unarmed in a survival situation grabbing a stick is the first step to your security.

Is there a way to convert the older ones to multi fuel or is running them on unleaded (with 10% ethanol) OK?

Wall Street Journal:

By JONATHAN CHENG

It is the ultimate bunker portfolio.

Amid the market tumult, a handful of stocks have seen their share prices ratchet up to record highs in recent weeks. And many of them are connected by a curious, if disconcerting, thread: Between them, they provide an investor with essentials for any respectable fallout shelter—makers of bottled water, canned goods, dehydrated broth, gas masks and auxiliary generators.

A portfolio of the 18 companies that reached their peaks in the past month would be up about 24% this year, compared with the broader market's 4.5% decline, a sign some investors may be taking the prospects of financial Armageddon more seriously than one might think.

Hormel Foods Inc., the 120-year-old producer of that dugout staple, Spam, is up 12% this year, and hit an all-time high of $43.95 in recent weeks. The company's stable of long-life provisions, from instant packets of dehydrated broth to wrapped sausages, are critical for weathering even the most prolonged storm.

Bottled-drink maker Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc., whose brands include DejaBlue purified drinking water, has soared 32% this year. The company also makes Schweppes ginger ale, great for any gnawing queasiness.

Also in the bunker club, Cummins Inc. The maker of a wide range of auxiliary power generators in addition to truck engines is up 66% this year. Shares of the Columbus, Ind., manufacturer hit a record $81.83 last Wednesday.

Hard hats and gas masks? Airgas Inc. makes both. Shares of the Radnor, Pa.-based company, which spiked in February after a hostile bid from rival Air Products & Chemicals Inc., has since added to those gains, hitting its best-ever close, at $66.72, on Friday.

"If it's the end of the world, what do you buy? Canned foods, guns and the generators," said Keith Springer, president of Capital Financial Advisory Services. "There are a huge number of people who feel this is the end of the world."

Of course, stocks trading at such lofty heights high aren't necessarily a tantalizing buy. But the bunker portfolio, while vastly oversimplified, does reflect investors' preference for companies with products that are relatively immune to economic swings, and whose conservative strategies are suited to these uncertain times.

"This is a very unusual economic cycle we're going through—we haven't been through anything like it in any of our lifetimes, and we don't know how it's going to play out," says Dorsey Farr, partner at Atlanta-based investment advisory French Wolf & Farr. "We don't see where this economy is going, and some of the potential outcomes are frightening."

Many of the star performers are steady dividend stocks: At least half of the companies on the list have increased their dividends this year, including Cummins, Dr Pepper Snapple and Airgas.

Hormel notched up its 44th consecutive year of dividend increases and raised its earnings guidance three times this year, as growing sales of its packaged foods allow the Austin, Minn., company to "grow despite economic turmoil."

Ventas Inc., a health-care real-estate investment trust, touts itself as all a conservative investor could ask for: "reliable and growing cash flows," "strong liquidity and limited debt," "a safe cash dividend with a long history of dividend growth," all in a defensive business that hits the sweet spot at the intersection of health care and senior housing. Ventas is up 16% this year and hit its record high of $52.41 earlier this month.

J.M. Smucker Co., the maker of jams, jellies and peanut butter, hit an all-time peak of $63.68 in late July after posting its ninth consecutive quarter of better-than expected earnings amid a boom in eat-at-home families.

"Consumers are relying more on basic pantry items including coffee, peanut butter and jelly and home-baked items and our brands play a lead role in all of those categories," the Orrville, Ohio, company said.

Ball Corp., a maker of metal cans and packaging, hit its high earlier this month after notching record second-quarter earnings. The Broomfield, Colo.-based company, which is up 9% this year, recently increased its plans for stock buybacks.

Baby-food maker Mead Johnson Nutrition Co.—an essential part of any family-friendly bunker portfolio—is up 20% this year and hit its high of $54.55 in late July.

This is a checklist that I created a couple years ago for storms. It has gone through several changes and this is it currently. Has come in handy a couple times making sure we do everything. It is mostly geared towards snow and ice. For summer we leave the food in the fridge and run the generator based on fridge temp.

Storm Checklist

72 hrs before:
	Test generator, chainsaw and snow removal equipment. Ensure enough oil and mixed gas
	Check supply of gasoline. Fill 2 more plastic cans if looks real bad.
	Clear any debris or lawn furniture and toys from the yard
	Ensure all bottles are frozen in the freezer
	Check flashlights and oil lamps. Check battery and lamp oil supply.
	Check for coolers in garage
48 hrs before:
	Pick up any needed supplies. Get extra milk and other perishables.
	Do all laundry
	Top off vehicle tanks
	Fill wood rack and leave full wheelbarrow in garage
	Get $200 out of bank/ATM.
24 hrs before:
	Move vehicles in driveway
	Feed birds and chickens
	Move snow equipment to attached garage
	Eat leftovers etc out of fridge
	Get out stove, propane tank etc.
	Charge cell phones
	Clean up house
Imminent:
	Move food in fridge freezer to deep freeze
	Put temp sensor in deep freeze and refrigerator
	Flashlights or LED lanterns in every room.
	Refill wheelbarrow with wood if needed.
	Move power supply into house
	Get showers
	Fill brew bucket with water in the kitchen and 2 buckets in the tub.
After Storm:
	If power is out move refrigerator food to cooler and put in garage with temp sensor once fridge hits 38
	Check house and garage for damage
	Clear driveway and clean off cars
	Get out the radio
	Set up propane stove
	Fire up generator when deep freeze hits 20

Just thought I'd poke in here.

I did some checking of the market for what's available for an "emergency radio". I was pretty disappointed. Most of the older models, ones with good vernier dials and made from good materials, don't offer any alternatives to batteries. Many of the newer models are really cheap junk. But, I did find one that hit on most of the high spots.

I finally decided on a Kaito KA500. Along with nicads, it offers battery power (3 AA cells), crank power to charge the nicads as well as solar power to charge the nicads. It's got a dedicated NOAA band, three SW bands as well as typical AM/FM bands. Of course it's got an LED light, white and red, AND it's got a charging port on the back for telephones and other items. It even includes a handful of typical phone charging leads in addition to a USB port if neede to charge something.

I got it the other day and tested it out. It works fine and seems to have good reception. It doesn't have a vernier dial to fine tune weak stations but that's not that critical.

I like this radio but, given the opportunity, I'd think that manufactuers might offer one similar to this one with more quality features at even double the $50 price tag. I'd glady pay $100 for one that was more robust and did have either digital tuning or a vernier dial.

I'd like to know what you all have and what you might recommend.

So I've been researching woodstoves for awhile now and i'm at a point where I don't know how to proceed:

I want a stove that has the following qualities:
1) Non-Catalytic
2) Can heat a 2400 square foot home from the lowest of 3 floors (very open floorplan)...doesn't need to heat farthest floors to warm...just "tolerable" since they are only sleeping levels
3) Can be used for cooking (boil water, make a meal, etc...not baking)
4) Requires the least amount of maintenance possible
5) Is as durable as possible (least amount of stuff to break)

So far I've been directed to Lopi, Jotul, Quadrafire (which look oddly like Lopi), Napoleon, and Pacific Energy.

I really like the "look" of the Napoleon 1150p Gourmet (has a real cooktop, etc)...but I know the tops of the bi-level lopi stoves, etc can be used as well.

Any suggestions? This has been a yearlong search and my real focus is on reliability more than anything...

I posted this in the survival forum to stress the "for emergency" usage aspect as well/perhaps someone else here may find useful. If it's the wrong spot- feel free to move.
