    Default Savage 110 build time!

So a year or so ago i purchased a Savage model 110 in 300 win mag for my dad because he wanted a cannon, and now doesn't! He returned the rifle to me after shooting it a little bit and said it was just a bit too much for him. So now i have a brand new 110 in mint shape that i would like to build into a 600yd gun or greater. My skills are not on par for the distance, but i will be practicing and getting some help from a family friend on long distance shooting. Now for some head scratchers...

Looking for an adjustable heavy stock, the gun will be a paper puncher so no lugging it around for me. any ideas on or experiences with products? i dont mind spending some money on the gun i aim to keep it for a long time if not indefinitely.

Secondly, I am considering replacing the barrel in the future. I have not shot the gun personally yet, so i can not speak of the accuracy. Just keeping the thought in mind.

Thirdly, what kind of optics should i be on the look out for long distance use? once again, this is something new for me! I had never had much thought of long distance shooting.

    Many thanks,
    Dom

I am getting a model 116, and have been compiling some resources for when I start tinkering it into a 800 yd+ pin-driver. I like the look of the thumbhole wooden stocks (Boydsgunstocks.com), and I can get the cheek rest that mounts separately, and putting a shock absorbing buttpad on there probably wouldn't be too difficult, I would assume they make drill-and-drop-in ones that could take the recoil pretty easily. Full composite ones are nice, I have to find the links to the site I was on, but they are pricey for ones that are useful as opposed to tacticool.

For a barrel, check for the Remington 700 custom build on the forums, he went through someone for a custom barrel, and they can do some pretty crazy stuff with the rifling... EDIT: It was actually a custom 260, not a Remington 700. http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbu...19-quot-Shorty The barrel company is Bartlein Barrels.

I have yet to look into optics(the one I'm buying comes with optics, and I want to get my hands on a Swarovski scope in the future. I have heard that bushnell is not bad, but I'm sure others are going to be able to chip in here much better than me on optics.

Nice on the Savage, they are supposed to be really good rifles.

I am a huge fan of savage rifles, i have had a couple out of the box that would shoot sub MOA with factory ammo. Savage really has a handle on their guns, but i am hesitant to shoot the gun for its severe recoil. I have never shot anything this powerful, thus adding weight to the gun with the stock and heavy barrel (gun currently has a wood stock and a sporter taper barrel.

Alot of good companies make prefit barrels and there are pretty reasonably priced. definitively something to look into, also upgrade stock and then put a good scope on. Boom done the rest is all you, the gun may be able to reach out to 600yd or further but can you harness that power?

Im always hunting for a used beat up savage rifle that i can steal the action off of.

Also use good quality ammo or handload

was really looking for personal experiences with savage builds in general, what brands to stay away from etc but do appreciate the words! Looked at shilen barrels online, thinking 30". Is there a particular advantage of the stainless vs the carbon steel barrel aside from the stainless resisting corrosion? Also considering a thread on muzzle brake, looking into the JP enterprises version. any thoughts?

yea ERshaw has barrels for around like 130$ or something, Douglas shilen krieger and those are gonna be atleast 300$ or more.

    Stocks:

    Manners hands down

    DBM:

CDI precision they use AW mags which are kinda pricey but they do have DBMs for savages

    Scopes:

Lower/middle end - Vortex, SWFA SS, the cheaper leupolds, some Zeiss's, IOR and others
Higher end - US optics, Nightforce, leupolds Hendolt and some others

looking into a sworovski (sp?) scope, they came highly recommended. Nice suggestions for the barrels! are the ERShaw barrels as good as the shilens? i dont mind paying, it isnt a budget build!

This is what is popular with HP Shooters in no particular order. They are all capable of making great barrels, but sometimes they ship out turds. I have never seen anyone at a rifle competition with an ER Shaw barrel. In fact I would put them at the very bottom of the list if I was spending my own money. I like Krieger and Douglas but my next barrel is probably going to be a Saturn.

    Bartlein
    Obermayer
    Satern
    Brux
    Rock
    Border
    Hart
    Douglas
    Lilja
    Tru-Flite
    Shilen
