I should hopefully have a date set this week. I'm talking with the range to "arrange" it. I'll post it as soon as I have the date. Or if I have a couple of options I will post a poll to see which date works best for everyone.

I would love to come, although i dont have my AR finished yet. I will be game for any get-togethers later this spring/summer though.

Quick question though: Is it possible for us out-of-staters to bring in no-ban "assault" weapons?!

The only way you can is for a match. We should have some AR15's availible for the clinic. I will let everyone know once I have the details worked. out.

***UPDATE***. I'll be heading up to Reading on Sunday morning to meet with the HP Director to pick a date. He told me they will have extra AR15's and M14's for loan. If you have a rifle that is not MA compliant all you need to do is trigger lock it. Our Clinic will be, for legal purposes, a Match, to comply with MA law for those with non-compliant weapons.

If you have any questions please post them or IM me.

I'd be interested too. But it will depend on my availability on the given dates.

I attended a 3-day clinic back in the late 1970s/early 1980s at Reading. We used M14s and M16s as the Army Reserve unit ran the course. Do you still have to pull butts there?

Jon,

What ever you can shoot the best with is the one you should use. People can do just as well with all three types. Myself I prefer the M16/AR platform because of the pistol grip. It works best for me. I've used an m14 before and I can't shoot that as easily as a M16. It just comes down to personal preference.

You guys may want to get some decent ammo. Bad ammo at 200 and 300 meters will be all over the place. If we have time we will go back to the 600 yard line.

The range wont let you shoot at the 600 yard line with 55 or 62gr ammo. I recommend getting 69gr for the 200 and 77gr for the 300 and 80gr for the 600. Once I have the course scheduled I'll let everyone know if we will have time to shoot the whole course of fire.

I was under the impression that all that was going to be there was AR-15's - Since I've at least *fired* an M1 once, I'm a little more familiar with it than with the AR's! Hey, if it was good enough for my uncle (Korea, I think - not sure), it's good enough for me!

LenS
03-24-2005, 05:57 PM
Tony, MA requires a LTC to possess any guns/ammo anywhere in the state (with very few exceptions).

airpw, to answer your question:

- MGLs require that anyone possessing/transporting firearms of any sort/ammo must have a MA LTC (FID for low-capacity rifles/shotguns only) with the following exceptions noted in the law:

* attending a match (with paperwork specifying the match, etc. in possession) or a gun show,
* LEO from anywhere in the USA (there seem to be some restrictions here too, but not likely to be a problem in practical terms),
* with someone in possession of a LTC who becomes "in charge"of the firearms while the unlicensed person is in MA and using or around the guns/ammo.

NOTE: Plinking or "just getting together to shoot" means you can't transport any firearms/ammo into MA nor can you be left alone with them.

TonyD

Len - what kind of paperwork is needed for me coming up there to help Derek teach the clinic? Apparently, it is considered a match.

Two of my friends have LTC but one does not. He is interested and wants to take part in the clinic/match. I assume he can join the match without a FID or LTC as if I was taking him shooting at the local club.

LenS
03-27-2005, 02:09 PM
airpw,

Correct, anyone can shoot with/without a MA license. However, someone must be "responsible" for the unlicensed shooter . . . meaning that a MA LTC holder must be present where the guns/ammo are and the unlicensed person can't be left alone with the guns/ammo at any time.

If the event is a "match" and the shooter has paperwork to prove it, the above does not apply and they can bring their own guns, shoot unsupervised, etc. as if they had a MA LTC.

The original Post on the Clinic has been updated please take a look.

TonyD
04-21-2005, 09:40 AM
Hey, everyone. I just wanted add a few things to the update. Derek and I have worked pretty hard to put this together and to write a course outline we felt would be the best for this class. This clinic will be mainly on the M16 / AR15 type service rifle and the classroom portion will cover such topics as:

Saftey
Nomenclature / Operation
Elements of accuarcy
Using a sling
Shooting positions

The afternoon will be spent getting your zero and shooting a practice match using everthing discussed in the morning. I suggest you bring about 100 rounds of good ammo at least 68 grains.

I also suggest you bring a shooting jacket if you have one, or a heavy long sleeve shirt or field jacket. You'll also need a glove for your weak (non-shooting) hand and you may want to bring a bottle of water or something to drink. I'm not sure what's available at the range.

We've also been assured by the CMP that our clinic is approved to meet the requirements for participants to purchase a M1 Garand through CMP sales.

I'm traveling 1,000 miles for this clinic so I hope all you local guys that expressed interest show up. If you have any questions, contact Derek or me.

TonyD
04-27-2005, 10:27 AM
Hey, folks!

I think I sent an IM to everyone who is bringing a rifle to the clinic but I also wanted to post it here.

If anyone doesn't already know, the type of shooting we will be doing requires the use of a sling that is capable of making a loop at the bottom and is easily adjustable at the top. We will be covering the use of the sling during the clinic but you'll need one to shoot with in the afternoon.

Most shooters use a leather National Match sling but you can also use a cotton M1 web loop sling.

Let me, or Derek, know if you have any questions.

See you there!

Semper Fi!

I went to 4 Seasons to get some Black Hills 68 grain(sale on it per FS email) for the upcoming class...Sold Out! Carl ordered 1000rds from his supplier while I was standing there, though it doesn't do me any good since I work until 8PM and Woburn is a nice little haul from Worcester. I did buy a brick of XM193 ($104.00 with tax) so it wasn't a total loss :)

Anybody know of a source/store that sells this ammo ? Hell,I'll even go to the Gunroom in Shrewsbury if I have too.I seriously doubt they will have match grade stuff though.

Supposedly (who am I to argue,I don't know a thing about comp shooting) the 68grain is good for my 1/9 twist. It has the ratings on the box .Thats all the match grade FS had was those 2 brands.

Almost $100.00 for 100 rounds of Federal is a little steep for me at the present time.Actually any time..LOL If I competed I'm sure it would make fiscal sense, but right now I am only in the "learning" stage.

I agree, it is steep. I was under the impression FS had the 68 gr Hornady. They're usually a little cheaper than BH's. You're 1:9 should stablize 68 gr Hornady or 69 gr (Sierra) BH's just fine. It would probably do okay with the 75 gr Hornady, as well. I think there will some ammo available at the clinic but I'm not sure what and how much.

The director of the range doesnt want to do it in the rain, there isn't enough room in the club house for 20, and there is way too much foot traffic from other members. Sitting in the rain for 2 or 3 hours isn't very fun either. I'd rather re-schedule at a later date and have the class and shooting all in one day, rather than have people make two trips.

I spoke with John Dunn at lunch, and in the even it rains we are still going to do the class portion in the Club house for the first couple of hours. Hopefully the rain will have stopped by lunch and we can proceed with the shootng outside.

Derek as you have the 20 and my son wants to shoot, (And could use the range time with the pending deployment) I will give up my seat for him on the range. I can be an extra range coach.

If it is raining in the morning we will do the class protion in the club house. Hopefully after lunch the rain will have stopped. As long as it isn't a down pour we will still shoot.

So if you have rain gear make sure you pack it.

The forecast has taken a turn for the worse. 46 and soild rain for Saturday. As of right now there is a good chance the clinic will be postponed to a later date.

Please check here Saturday morning for the clinic status before heading to Reading, MA. John, Tony, and myself will make the decision at around 6:30 am.

Kinda had a feeling when I saw this morning that they're calling for gale force winds on the coast. Dang it. I'm going to pull my vacation day so it's not wasted if postponed. I can always call early in the AM and request an emerg vac day.

For those of us dead-set on shooting on Saturday- would any of you guys (TonyD, Derek?) consider going somewhere more northernly? Not for a formal clinic, but at least to show me and some guys how to get a few rounds off. I, for one, would be more than willing to pay whatever costs would be associated.

Due to the pending Inclement weather the High Power Rifle Clinic has been postponed to a later date.

When I have a new date cleared I will re-post it here.

Tomorrow the temp will be in the 40's with up 1 and 1/2" of rain, winds in the mid 20's and windchills in the 30's.

Wahhhh... I'm relieved and disappointed. Relieved because it's not fun to shoot in rain (I'm not even sure I could SEE a target 600 yards away in the rain!! Especially with wet glasses. ) and disappointed because I won't get to meet y'all for a while now.

Oh well... Riverside Gun Club has an indoor range, and I still need to put some rounds through the new (used) P12 to see if it's reliable enough to carry. Think I'll spend some quality time with Mr ParaOrdnance tomorrow instead.

Well... the 100 yard range at Riverside has a covered shooting line, but it's only 100 yards - you just have to use smaller targets! :-) However, i can only take two guests... we'd have to find some more members to host 10 guests!

Well, it wasn't Reading and it wasn't 600 yds, but our two Marines and a couple of civilians met at Braintree R&P this AM. I could only hang around for ~1 hour as I was headed off to the GOAL Annual Meeting and Banquet, however according to Derek, they spent the day there, first shooting rifle at 50 yds and then shooting pistol. Here are some pictures I took of our fearless Admin and Mods shooting rifle. Very rainy, pools of water down by the targets, wind whistling thru with gusts 30-40mph, but they shot from under cover. Pictures aren't great, taken with a cell phone camera.

Len - It was great to meet you and I hope your GOAL meeting went well. I wish we could have spent more time together. We spent about 4 hours out in that nasty stuff but it was great practice.

To everyone else, it really sucked that things went the way they did. I was really looking forward to meeting everyone and having a nice class and range session. I doubt that I'll get back up for the class when it goes off but Derek will put on a good one.

Fart's, if you read this, your NASCAR - fu is weak! Hope you got your tire fixed.

D - tell Mel again how much I appreciated all the hospitality. If not before, see you at Perry and both of you in Sept.

Tony, it was a real pleasure meeting you and I also regret that we couldn't have more time to spend together. I certainly hope there will be some other times together.

The GOAL meeting was good, not spectacular. New location wasn't bad, just small (compared to the Best Western-Marlboro). Poor turnout for Annual Meeting (28 attendees), but probably 400+ for the banquet and short speech by Miss Massachusetts. Very tasteful tribute to our Armed Services started the Banquet with very nice movie and slide presentations.

I guess that I'll post the rest of info on GOAL meeting in a separate thread in some appropriate forum, so as not to hijack this thread.

I tell you what. Saturday was no joke. I've only once shot in worse weather once and that was at 5000 feet in Nevada. The weather Saturday was in the low 40's, winds well in the 30's, and solid rain. I froze my rear end off, unfortuneately I didn't freeze off enough of it.

TonyD
05-09-2005, 10:27 AM
It was horrid. With only a sweatshirt and shooting jacket I was very uncomfortable. My feet absolutely froze in my jungle boots. However, Derek and I were able to really work on a few things and I was able to really tighten up my 200 yard standing. We were shooting 10 shot strings at 50 yards on reduced targets. Also, Derek got Brent on a rifle for the first time and I was really impressed with what he turned out. Good job, Brent.

Sounds like you guys still had fun despite the weather. Sounds a bit like what I qualified in , in the Army minus the amount of wind.

LenS
05-09-2005, 11:09 AM
That whole situation reminded me of the time we were supposed to qualify with the PD and the weather was similar (but much less wind) . . .

I called my Sgt and asked "are we still going to qualify in this miserable weather?". His response was that "if we ever have to use the firearm to defend ourselves/others, we don't get to pick the weather!"

After that I understood, and as Tony and Derek stated, when the National Matches are held, the event goes on regardless of the weather! Braintree is a pretty good place to shoot even in miserable weather, since the back is all latticed and there is a huge roof over the shooting pavilions, the walls on the sides of the ranges and the baffles offer excellent protection to the shooter.

The cold was biting! I was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt under a jacket, no gloves and that cold wind was anything but pleasant.

It won't take much to have nicer weather than this past weekend!

No, it is not usually this bad in May! But nothing about the weather in the US/World seems to have been "usual" lately!
