Neither Mike nor I have lost it and the offer is genuine. This is something that we have been discussing for several months. Both of us believe in getting quality training and this is our thank you for all of the folks that have supported us over the years. This is a one time offer and will not be repeated, ever.
And now to the details that Mike has not mentioned in his post
I strongly suggest that we all stay in Pahrump, NV. - cheaper and closer
Pahrump (indian word for "water rock") is a nice town with a good selection of hotels and restaurants.
You will have to buy your own ammo.
We order our ammo in advance at the local Walmart and they will have it ready for us when we arrive
Our thoughts are the we share rental cars and hotel rooms to save some dollars.
Even after 9-11, there is no problem flying with a gun in a locked case.
To make things easy, we suggest that we fly out of Manchester, NH because the airport is gun friendly

Jim - I will not be able to consider this (family/work committments), however, I suggest you consider working with the host to make sure it qualifies as NV training and leave enough time in the schedule for a field trip to apply for Nevada CCWs. Nevada does not recognize permits from other states, and requires that the state mandated training take place inside NV, so this is an extra you should be able to easily add.

The intent that we have in place is what we are offering.

If someone wants to stay the extra day to take the CCW module they can at there own expense.

And they must fly back to pick up there CCW license in person in 3 -6 months it will not be mailed.

Food for thought

For those of you that have decided to take advantage of the course offer,
please send me an email (jim@neshooters.com) with your contact info so that we can put you on the official list of those going.

If any of you want to get a Nevada CCW permit, there is a 1 day CCW class held on the day after our class that costs $500.00. Neshooters will not pay for this CCW class. If you select this class, be aware that you must go to Nevada to pick up your permit. They will not mail a CCW for anyone.

OK Guys now that the allocation of seats is set and the waiting list is formulating.

10 Seats along with Jim, Myself and possibly 2 other Select Guest's.

Lets talk.

We will be having a meet, evaluate and info session regarding the course of action from here. Date and time to be determined.

There are some things that Jim and I would like to pass on to you pistolero's, some of the info we have garnered from the numerous visits we have made to Front Sight. As well as making sure your skills are up to par so you throughly enjoy your visit to Front Sight. The offering that we have put together is important to us, and we would like to see it happen in style.

If for some reason you cannot fullfill your request. Please let us know without delay.

Everyone is required by Front Sight to pay a $ 50.00 fee for a Background Check. It is good for one (1) year from the submital date. These will need to be completed by all of us in the spring of next year.

There is 14 months to plan this event so it will go off with out a hitch.

We recommend:
*We all fly out together if possible from Manchester NH
*We will all stay in Parhump, NV (Saddle West Hotel & Casino)
*Double up in Hotel Rooms to cut costs if you would like.
*Share rental cars fees. 2 -3 or 4 per car?
*Bulk purchase ammo at Walmart Pahrump,NV IE 4 shooters should be able to share 3000 RDS of Ammo the round count is posted 800 more like 600 -700 RDS Actual

Jim and I will stay in touch and are looking forward to hosting this event.

Could you please clarify if we need to fill out the Frontsite online application now or later on (in the spring?) as the application requires the info and credit card for the background check? I understand they have just one application for the class and the background check, not the two separate ones.

You are correct The Form is and does cover both items. And it need not be submitted until next year. It is linked for your review and to prepare those of you for the requirements needed to attend.

I will be contacting Front Sight in the fall of 2007. And getting there advance course schedule for 2008 so I can pick the course date in October 2008.

Mike and I have been going over the list of those going to Front Sight with us next year and had some concerns. We have also had some concerned callers (wifes and loved ones etc.) that are worried about all you guys loose together in the Nevada wilderness.
Mike and I have pondered this problem long and hard and have decided that a chaperone would be in order.

Mr. TonyD has graciously agreed to fill this role.

That said, the wife and I worked out the budgeting for this last night and everything is a 'go'. At least with this much advance notice, I won't have any surprises. In fact, the whole family might go out west and make an extended vacation of it. My wife's dad lives in Arizona during the cooler months. (or Maui when it's too hot)

I would like to inquire if the group has checked out the Front Sight web site and reviewed the requirements, class that we will be attending? If there are any questions regarding this adventure ask. Check out Pahrump,NV etc. We want you to have the correct gear and accessories needed to really get the best performance out of your minds and bodies. There is alot of stuff you may want to bring but really will not need.

So please ask and we will start filling in the gaps.

There's a differance in being ready then being prepared

I almost always pack way too many clothes as I second guess everything. With the latest airline restrictions down to 50 lbs for luggage, some idea of what you find the most comfortable would be nice.

As for gear, I'm pretty much all set. I just need to remember to pack it all. (^_^) I almost always forget one little thing that turns out to be important. Last time I traveled for a class, it was my dark shooting glasses. Naturally, there wasn't a cloud in the sky the whole time. Ended up wearing my driving glasses which are not nearly as comfy under muffs.

Also, don't forget to pack cleaning supplies. I prefer not to use the factory bottle, but stick with simple small unlabeled bottles stuck in with my toiletries so that there is no questioning about if product XYZ is allowed. Just be sure that YOU can tell what is in each bottle. (^_^)

Bring several bottles of sunscreen. I've really come to love the Bullfrog brand as it is not at all greasy when applied and the pump spray is allowed on airlines as well as being easy to apply. Also, be sure to pack along some of those "moist towels" in the little sealed packages. They do a great job cleaning your hands of sweat and grime that builds up. Also feels great on your neck.

If you have synthetic clothes, bring 'em. The most vital is synthetic socks. Goes a long way to keeping your feet comfy in the heat. I don't know about Front Sight's ranges, but most of the places I've been to in Texas and Arizona are a rough gravel and a light hiking boot is the best footware.

If anyone knows of a good source for light synthetic long-sleve t-shirts, I'd be happy to hear.

JimConway
06-18-2007, 03:51 PM
After you have signed up for the class, they will send a list of what the recommend that you have. As I remember the list is:

A locked case for you guns on the airline
A gun and a spare (the same caliber is the best idea)
Holster - Strong side - straight drop (Comp-Tac or Blade-tech work best)
Mag pouches for 2 or 3 mags (I carry the rest in my pockets)
Mags (the more the better)
A Cleaning kit (1 for every 2 students should work)

Eye protection
Ear Protection (amplified is strongly recommended)
Ball cap (We should all be wearing a NEshooters cap)

Things to get at the local Walmart
Cheap styrofoam cooler (1 for every 2 students to keep lunches cold)
Sun Tan oil (you can get this at Front Sight also)
Ammo (you can get this at Front Sight also)

Clothing
it will be cool to chilly in the morning and quite warm at mid day.
Normally, I wear a flannel shirt over a polo shirt with a light jacket. That way I can remove layers as needed.

Thanks for the info, Jim. Could you give a little more detail how each of these tests are run? Are the shooting tests all run at the same time, or do you stop and setup between each test? How are the reload drills run? And with the malfunction drills, do you start with a known malfunction in your gun (like the way we trained), or do they induce a malfunction midway through the drill?

Thanks!

JimConway
08-29-2007, 03:22 PM
The shooting tests are run one after another late on the last day. I should mention that should you have a MLF during the shooting part of the test, you will get a free untimed shot.
For the MALF tests, you set one up and then clear it. If you go over the time limit or do the clearance wrong, there is a 3 point penalty. All of the MALF clearances are diagnostic, which we have covered, but only briefly.
They do the type 3 (double feed) the old and sure way, so it would be a good thing to practice it a lot.
I am shooting on Sunday, come on up to WSC and I will run you through the procedures.

TonyDedo

Remind me, exactly what is the procedure for the "old and sure" way? IIRC, it involved racking the slide repeatedly until the jammed round falls out, but I forget the sequence. I prefer the strip/reload/rack method myself.

How late will you be at WSC on Sunday? I have to work at the bookstore until 5:00, so I wouldn't be able to make it up until 5:30.

JimConway
08-29-2007, 03:58 PM
To set up a type 3, lock the slide back, put a round in the chamber, insert a loaded mag and ease the slide forward.

To clear a type 3, do the following
Point the gun and pull the trigger
The gun does not fire and the trigger feels like mush.
Look to see if it is a type 2 or a type 3
You will see "high Brass"
Lock the slide back
Strip out the mag
Rack the slide 3 times
Insert a new mag
Rack the slide
Point the gun, assess, and fire if necessary

I asked about an additional six certificates and they agreed they may be able to provide them. If you are on the waiting list you should be going and some others maybe also. We will have to see what number they actually come up with.

Thanks again.

Lets not loose sight of the big picture, We need the original 10-12 on the list to commit first.

Before there will be any additional seats placed out there to fill.

There has been no firm commitment from FRONTSITE yet.

So lets continue on the same path we were on.

If additional seats are available then Jim & I will work on fillling what is available.

So business as usual.

We placed 10-12 out there lets fill them and move forward.

Thanks for the interest and your commitment.

Jim and I are scheduling a meeting for March 2008 to go over the "plan" for the event. The exact date will be posted shortly.
The location will be the Westford Sportsmans Club in Westford, MA

As a reminder you all will be required prior to our March meeting to have applied for and submitted your background check forms to Frontsite. They are on the Frontsite web site. Please take the time to download the form. The background check is a prerequsite for attending the course. They are good for 1 year from the date of confirmation.

Please mark to top of the application as follows "Neshooters, LLC Group for Jim Conway & Mike Nastek". This info will ensure that we are all in the same class

The base 10 seats are filled according to Jim so lets see what we can do to firm up the stand by list.

Thanks for the interest and support.

The following course review of the "4 Day Defensive Handgun" Course was written by a good friend and a very good shooter. The course that he and his wife took was last week. This is the same that we will be attending. Enjoy

"Just briefly...Robin and I attended a 4 day defensive pistol class at Front Sight last weekend. A friend of ours has a level of membership that allows him to invite up to 39 others to his class once a year. We stayed in Vegas at a Hilton and commuted each day. It was grueling. One FULL hour each way.

Code of mental awaremeness...combat mindset...moral ethical decisions in shooting...problem 2 and 3 (criminal and civil liability)...Very well presented.

The range work began with dry practice from the holster to evaluate each student. Shooting followed shortly thereafter. All shooting was less than 15 meters and most was in the 3 - 10 range. "After action drills" began immediately trying to get the students to think about movement. It was pointed out that "movement" on the square range would be quite different from real life but that's the way it had to be. The key thing they wanted to make everyone think about was movement during and after shooting.

Turning targets were used to keep people moving along. Slow at first and speeding up toward the end. One really had to press the envelope toward the end of the week.

FS is a weaver school. They advocate weaver stance. They advocate a grip that has the firing hand thumb on the safety of a 1911 with the support hand thumb on top of it.

Malf drills. Type one, two, three and slide lock reloads were drilled. And drilled. And drilled. Performance of these clearances was part of your grade.

Concealment was added after the second day. All shooting drills and malf drills were handled from concealment. The school drills were a bunch of timed shots to body and head all shot from concealed. It was a challenge. 1.8 sec headshots from 5 yds. 2 second from 7 yards was my recollection of some of the times. About 500 rounds from concealed.

Once everyone was squared away with shooting tactics were discussed and a trip to the shoot houses for dry practice runs and live fire runs. Then to add stress they created a man on man shootout on falling/reactive steel. One four inch square hostage head shot to the side of the head of an IPSC-like steel hostage target. 10 yards or so. After you hit it you transition to a couple of falling steel targets at about 15 or 20 yards. Do it before the other guy and you win. We just kept going through the class until it was Robin, the light speed guy and me. Mr. Light speed beat Robin while they both shot it clean. And he beat me too while I shot it clean...except he nicked the hostage. Oops, he loses! Then they bring over the winner of the shooter in the other four day pistol class to take me on. I beat him with a clean run. Great fun and a good stress inducer for most folks.

The lightspeed gent has taken 30 class from FS and is an accomplished shooter. (Retired, well-to-do, gent) He had the fastest draw stroke I've ever seen. .5 from the holster from concealed with his Wilson Combat 1911 and shot accurately. 57 year old guy just smokin fast...it gives me hope since I turned 53 today!

One of the last lectures was called "The realities of the street." Actual school, office, restaurant security videos of vermin beating up and shooting people. It was one powerful message. Bad things happen. The INSTANT that something looks like it's heating up...is the time to flee or plan for an alternative. Have you all ever seen the video of the columbine scum shooting the kids in school and then blowing their heads of together? It will make you sick. There are bad people out there and you better realize it and be prepared...was the message.

Notable differences from things I've learned elsewhere.

1. When unloading. Chamber check first, drop mag, remove round in chamber, chamber check again. holster. Chamber check, mag check. All the time every time. If I'm going to unload I always assume there's a round in the chamber so why check? I drop the mag and remove the round, check the chamber. Nope, check the chamber first unload and check it after. I think it is to get the beginning student to constantly think about the gun as being loaded. For me, that's just needless manipulation.

2. Tac loads. The action is...drop the magazine into your support hand, mag into a spare pocket, remove a mag from the belt, insert mag. They have changed from the manipulation of two magazines in one hand. For the obvious reason to eliminate fumbling by those with small hands. I ran it conventionally and with their method and its pretty fast. That is...as long as you were wearing the right clothing. That was discussed too.

3. Type three malf clearance (double feed) for those CCW folks who don't carry an extra mag. When you identify the oops...move, lock, strip the mag and retain it between the small fingers of your firing hand, rack rack rack and reinsert the same mag. Par time I think was was 5.7 seconds. It's a great idea for me as I regularly carry with only one mag on me. I know, it's not good, it's just what has to be at times.

Overall I found the training to be good and the instructors to be competent and accomplished. (One gent just got back from a two year State Department Blackwater gig)

I've got to tell you that their "distinguished graduate" level of performance is quite challenging.

As for marketing...one lunchtime presentation on the membership.

While the range facilities are very nice, after 10 years of existence there is still no running water, no toilets, and no meals on site. I think it's difficult to call the place a "resort" with those basic amenities among the missing.

I hope that those of you who are attending Frontsight with us had the time to read this great review of the course. Ken is a well rounded shooter and has trained with the best there is out there so this assesment is a great review. Jim and I have already discussed it in length and are anticipating our return for the updated curriculum.

Also as posted we will be having a meeting in March of 2008 could you all get together and agree on a Sunday in March between 11 AM & 1PM(Off this thread) that works for all of you. Reserve list welcome also. When you have decided let Jim and I know.

When you all get the time check out there website for some of the data they offer. In preparation for the class.

Three of you have been moved up from the waiting list to the list of those that are going to Front Sight.

At the March meeting, we will be asking all of those going to purchase a Neshooters ball cap for the princely sum of $15.00.
We have to make some money out of this give away.

We expect all of you to be wearing the Neshooters caps during the class.

If there are any of you that wanted to go and did not sign up because of the waiting list, now is the time to get onto the list, because the waiting list is very small. If all goes well, I would excect that most, if not all, of the current waiting list will be going and maybe some additional folks.

The meeting that we mentioned for those going with us to Front Sight will be held at the Westford Sportsmen's Club in March 1, 2008If the weather is bad we will have the meeting the following Saturday on March 8, 2008.
All of you that are on the main list plus those on the waiting list should plan to attend this meeting. We plan to discuss the logistics of the trip and assign the Free Training Certiificates to those that plan to go.
We suggest that you bring the gear that you plan to use in the class. We will check your gear to ensure that it will work for the class. This way there will be plenty of time to get any additional gear that may be needed.

After all that is done, we plan to give you all a shooting primer on the range, so that you are all better prepared to ace the course.

Jim and I were just talking this morning and came up with another reason for all of you to attend the March meeting. While Nevada requires in-state training to get their CCW permit, they recognize the Utah permit. For those of you going with us who do not already have a Utah permit, I'll do the required Utah course. This will let you to get your Utah permit before the trip, thus allowing you to carry while you're there. The permit costs $65.25 for 5 years. Applications are currently taking about 60 days to process. You can download the application form here (http://www.bci.utah.gov/CFP/ccwapp.pdf).

Well, I'm still holding out hope that the long range forecast for March 1 holds.

GOAL's annual meeting is on March 1 as well. IF, however, the rain/snow predicted does move this meeting to the 8th, I won't have to make a choice. And frankly, my obligations to GOAL would likely mean I would skip this one if push came to shove.

Yes the FS web site does say 800 rounds
The 800 number is correct for returning students like Mike and I, because we will be shooting while the first timers are attending lectures. Our experience has shown the 600 will be close to right for you. You do not want to have much ammo left over because of the airline rules on how much you can have on the plane. If you think that you are going to be light on the last day you can always get more either at Walmarts or at Frontsight.

As I'm starting to get all my ducks in a row, I contacted Front Sight to make sure the application for instruction I did a while ago was in their system. It wasn't. I was told it needs to be submitted at least two weeks before the class starts. According to their web sight, the certificates also need to be in two weeks before the class starts. That means the certificates and the applications need to be there by Friday AM.

I'll have a FedEx package going out tomorrow.

To those of you joining NEShooters on our trip. I hope all is well and your putting your gear together and you are looking forward to this trip as much as Jim & I. Please check the bagage restrictions and limitations on your airline prior to your flights. I recommend that you print off the guidelines for traveling with a firearm(s) relative to the airline that you are traveling on and have it ready if needed for your Attendant/TSA at check in.

I will have your ammo for you at the hotel when you check in.
So we can clear that matter up ounce you get settled.

See you in a week + 2.

The www.saddlewest.com is now under new management and that is good news for Front Sight students and members.

They now offer new room rates and allow firearms in the room as long as you sign the waiver.

They have a box lunch and disposable coolers for a 2.00 discount as well. "

This is recent from Jon at FrontSight. It looks like we are golden

Jim, would it be possible to send an email to the entire group with a list of attendees and their email addresses? I have a list from some emails back in April, but I believe it's incomplete.

Based on Mike's ammo buy post edite 10/2, it looks like we have the following:

.45 folks
Jim C.
Mike N.
Doug R.
Mike E.
Chris R.

9mm folks
Ken M.
Denise D.
Bob M.
Sean C.
Andy D.
Yakov O.
Jake S.
Mark W.
Jeff R.

I wanted to send an email to the group to inquire about the following:

1) I wanted to see who else is on the same flights as I am and if they are interested in sharing travel to/from MHT. I depart MHT on Oct. 16 at 11:15 am and return to MHT on October 21 at 6:50 pm.

2) I have a car reserved in Las Vegas and wanted to see if anyone wants to share the car/expenses. I believe Jeff R. is already in with me on the car.

Is anyone planning to go from the Saddle West to McCarran to catch a noon-ish flight on Tuesday? If so, I'd love to get a ride since Mark is planning to spend Monday night in Vegas.

I'm flying in to and out of Los Angeles in order to visit family afterward. I'll be driving up to Pahrump on Thursday and returning Tuesday morning. I can drop you off at McCarran, since it's not really out of the way.

I'm flying out of Manchester on the 16th on Southwest at 11:15am and returning on the 21st. I have a 10:00am flight on the 21st and have rented a car as well, so I can assist as well if necessary.

A list of names an addresses of gun owners really shouldn't be posted on a public forum.

Point well taken. I just E-mailed a copy to everybody I had on the original list, plus a couple of corrections and additions. If you don't get a copy, then I probably don't have your correct address, which means that nobody else looking at the list has it either. PM me and I'll correct it.

Mike, your travel schedule is the same as mine. I'm going to send an email to the list that ken just sent us, as I'd like to see if anyone is interested in sharing a ride to/from and parking at MHT. Please respond via email if you want to share the travel and parking costs at MHT.

Thanks.
