I had to sell my AR....took me a year to get it all built and got sick...my therapist says I will be ok.

Yes, but it looks very nice on my lower. I will let you visit it on occasion, and may actually let you shoot it once in a while if you are nice. [rolleyes]

ARMYSGTPM, had you considered just a standard rail, without the front sight there? I ask, because I am considering doing a similar mod to my AR. I have the standard M4 picatinny rail, but want it JUST beyond my front sight, as this is where I want to put my hand naturally. I have read of others simply removing their front sight post by cutting it off, and putting the rail system over it. Just curious if thats something you considered, or if you prefer to have the sight there, as you do. IF I decide to do it, it likely wont be till next summer-and, I may just pick up a complete BCM monolith upper instead :)

I did tons of considering....but my main reason for the rails with the cut out were this...living in MA my comp was already pin and welded and I did not want to have to have it cut off to remove the FSB replace with micro gas block and then buy a new comp/brake and weld it back on. This was more work/money than I wanted to spend...I considered also just buying new barrel micro gas block and new comp but still more money than I wanted...plus once i replace the FSB w. a micro gas block I then would need to buy flip up front sight and again spend more money....while this rail was hard to find...i found that most free float tubes require removing the FSB which i just wasn't willing to do with my pin/welded comp, I like have the Front site there, I don't notice it when using my optics and I personally like the looks of it....if my budget was bigger and i was doing it i would just build a whole new rifle with a micro gas block and extend the rails over that, but with what i already owned and budget constraints i am very happy with the rails i bought.

Just a note too, that removing the FSB does not require cutting...it is pined to the barrel and can be removed fairly simply...but you must be able to remove your muzzle devices to slide the FSB off once the pins are removed.

Thanks. I have a few options to look into. Prior to me seeing your build, I didnt know that they HAD a slotted free float one.

ArmySGTPM pretty much hit it right on. If you are going to swap your rail system, you are going to need one to be able to move the gas block to change the nut unless you go with certain ones. The Midwest industries clamps around the barrel nut so you would not have to do that. There is also a new player out ther called Apex...working on getting one for review now.

Figure it out before you pin that FSC though Bill, don't make me slap you for burning away my freebie!

I will do a little write up once I can get it to the range and run a few hundred through it (hopefully this weekend). The last match my hold over was killing me at the close range, I will see who long it lasts before I get the itch for a dot. But just playing with it on my back deck, when I rotate the gun, it seems to line right up for me with out moving my face at all.

Yeah, I got hammered on hold over also. I'm going back to open, I picked up a Primary arms green micro with an offset scope mount that so far works very well. It was about $100 shipped. so its a cheap way to go.

Ed,
The wrapping looks awesome. The long handguard feels good. I've been going out farther on the hanguard, at least with what little practice I do. As far as holdover for sight offset, practice will give you speed. I've told Mike that too.[grin]
I've not been thrilled with the JP sight on the handguard, the sight radius is too short, and the position doesn't seem optimum. I do like the looks of this set up though.

Nice Ed, I'm digging the XL handguard. You're going to love the combination of lightened carrier, adjustable gas block and that brake.

I got to rip a quick, and I mean quick, 200 rounds through it today. All I can say is WOW, this thing is fast. [smile] The combination of the JP XL tube and the lowpro adjustable block is awesome. With one of those round tipped allen keys, that let you use them at an angle, I was able to adjust the gas block with the tube installed. It took me 9 rounds to find the sweet spot on the gas block, then I saw the reasoning for the lightened carrier, rifle length gas system, this very effective comp, and adjustable block. This rifle does not move under recoil.

I'd like to hear what you think of the JP Iron sights

While I was not really pushing it the way I would in a match, I liked the sight. It looks as though it would be hard to get the top of the post to line up right giving a proper sight picture, but I did not find that. As I rolled the rifle from the scope to the short sight, it lined up fine. I can see what Dan is saying about the short sight radius being an issue on shots out past 10 or so yards, but being up close, I was able to get a sight picture and rip off multiple shots pretty fast. I know I would be faster with a dot mounted there instead, but this works for now. IMO, I need to work on getting faster at everything else first.

My dad was with me, he didn't get was so special about the rifle. Then after my first mag he asked me when I got my MG license. [laugh] Then he shot it and was amazed at the lack of recoil. Of course, his only experience is with mil issued M4's. To say I am happy with this rifle is an understatement and a half. [smile]

Awesome. Its amazing how smooth they shoot. Are you using a JP or Firebird Gas block? A Standard rifle buffer or a lightened buffer?

BCM Upper, I think a 16" barrell but been thinking about getting a 14.5 with a muzzle device to make it over 16". It'll also have a DD Hand guard, Magpul front and rear sights with an Eotech XPS 2-0 in the middle. I'll also mount a flash light and a vertical grip on it.

Thanks guys.

I had an FCC that had a hard on for fancy work. When I was a young 3rd class, he sent me to the boatswains to learn, and then had me do almost everything in tomahawk equip room. It grew on me, and I do it here and there now to make things my own.

My wife wonders why random things around the house have line wrapped around it. I told her some things just look better with a little fancy work. Including my monkey fist on my key chain.

Nice AR, BTW.

Edit: I've been getting a lot of PMs about this, don't mind them but the PMAG is internally limited to 10rds by a company that installs a block inside and then pins the base plate so that if you try to get it off you will destroy the mag, ask me how I know lol. The mag CAN NOT hold more than 10rds. That is all. :-)

The rifle is loud period, unless you put a supressor on it, then it is "less loud".. lol.

I had my buddy shoot the rifle as I was standing next to him (2ft away) and had no issues more than normally having an AR-15 being fired next to me. Not trying to be "vague" but honestly I don't notice any real significant difference between being next to a standard A2 flashhider, Phantom flashhider or muzzle brake or FSC556...

I will say I could notice a difference with the new "Battlecomp" that is the new ARFCOM koolaid. It is nice, and I would be a fanboy and buy one... or two.. but I don't feel like dropping 150 on a muzzle device right now.. [grin]

ETA:
PLUS! The FSC556, along with the midlength gas system, 14.5in barrel, FA BCM BCG and H buffer have made the lightest shooting AR I have ever shot and it is simply "happiness with 5.56/.223 [smile]

I'm with you on the middy's. We have almost identical tastes after all [wink] (mine is a 16") and it is just pure joy to shoot. I think the FSC556 is actually quieter than an A2, having stood near both on the same day to test the theory out. No matter what, shooting is a loud activity. Oh yea, nice EBR's guys!

I sent the Sightmark scope back to Midway. It would not zero out. After coming as far left as I could, I was still right of the bulls eye at 200 yards. I tried an aimpoint and an old simmons I had kicking around and those would zero to a laser bore sighter and got over a hundred clicks left and right of that windage zero. Definitely an internal misalignment in the signmark scope. I sent it back and got a Konus M-30 Tactical Rifle Scope, 30mm Tube, 8.5-32x 52mm Side Focus with Illuminated Mil-Dot Reticle. It was $75 more than the Sightmark and I'm hoping I don't have to send it back. I will let you know how it does.

Thanks! I appreciate it...

The pig is actually great, most of the stuff I've read on them is the same, use on sbrs for more reliable gas operation, basically I have a 13.7" barrel and the pig is pinned making it 16.1", it's also a carbine length gas system so the pig supposedly helps it out. I'm using an H buffer and realistically the recoil isn't much more than a hot .22. Only downside I can see is it's a little front heavy...but I like it that way.

So far it's run flawlessly for about 2700rds, had one FTF because of a bad follower.

I know I just stuck it in that way just to get an idea of what the rifle will look like. I lost the bufffer retainer pin somehow so I'm waiting for that to arrive then I can finish

Sweet Mk 12 Mod 1 Tackleberry.

Thanks. The plan was for a MK12 Mod1 replica. As I got closer to the end of the build I couldn't bring myself to buying the KAC RAS rail and went the URX rail instead because I have the $250 barrel nut wrench and $300 vice jaw specifically for the URX for my other rifles. In the end I'm happy with the way it came out. With the FDE paint job it sort of gives it that M110 look.

Aimpoint P.R.O

I originally bought the sling as a cheap holdover until the Troy Battlesling Group Buy came through, but it's actually a pretty good sling for the money.

Nice but I have a suggestion. If you move the rear sight all the way back on the rail, you can probably flip it up and have it cowitness with the Aimpoint.

Quick picture after the range trip this morning, first time out with the 18" rifle since I finished the build a couple weeks ago. It shot very well once I got the scope zero'd, the White Oak Barrel definitely lives up to the reputation!

I did have 2 rounds that failed to feed, the round seemed to have gotten stuck as the case mouth was a little rolled over. Not sure if it was the pre-ban mags (hadn't used them before so they may have feeding issues), Ultramax ammo, or too much of the Hoppe's oil used to lube everything up.

Seen with my S&W M&P15-22, just got the MagPul AFG and rail covers today as well.

No, not on the top of the detail list but you being a pass/present 3P0X1 must know what the deployment tempo has been like for a Security Forces Airman over the last 10 years. I've saved a lot of money from my tours overseas and I'm investing it in firepower and lead seeming it's collecting sh*t in the bank.

I just got back from sighting it in. I was shooting tight groups of at least 2 MOA at 100yds, but I'm sure it's capable of better since I was shooting bench rest holding the rifle without a sandbag or stand.

So far I'm very pleased with the scope.

He has a red dot mounted on the side of the scope for close range targets, so he turns the rifle over to get the sight picture. The support hand all the way forward helps him drive the rifle with more control and speed.

Plus, it's Gangsta yo. [wink]

I'm a broke gangsta, I only have a short iron sight offset.

I'm a broke gangsta too, all I have is a Sightron 3-9 on some too short rings on my rifle! hahaha

ETA: I did just order a Harris bipod though, I think I will get some better rings and go more of a DMR/SPR route with it.

Here's my first build so far.... almost complete. Need some BUIS, some mags, and get the compensator pinned/welded and I will be good to go. Might pick up an AFG too. Upper/lower from the American Weapon Systems group buy a little while back.

OK, just finished my first AR-15.

Halpern Titanium, Inc. lower (out of Three Rivers, MA) with Magpul MOE grip and Palmetto LPK (thanks, Underwhere!)
BCM mid length upper w/ 14.5" standard barrel, FSC556 comp attached, bayo lug removed by myself
BCM Gunfighter charging handle (good advice, smitty!)
Daniel Defense M16 BCG
Magpul MOE handguard
Cheap-o detachable carry handle, which is surprisingly solid
M.A.G.S. EFX-A1 stock
Troy CQB 1-point sling with Troy M16 sling mount

I have a few pre-ban magazines at the moment, courtesy of nanerclip. Looks like I'll get a few more from Tackdriver, as well.

The plan is to practice with my irons for the time being and improve my skills (which are quite lacking). Eventually I expect to buy a red dot and a quality folding rear sight for BUIS. Tempting though the EOTech group buy is, I just don't have the funds right now. Hopefully the longer I wait, the better/cheaper my sight options will be.

I do want to attach a Surefire G2 to the fore-end utilizing the tail cap instead of a pressure switch. Any ideas for a good mount with my current config?

Any other suggestions, insights, criticisms, etc. are welcome.

Looks like a solid carbine, I like it.

I would go for either a bolt-on rail section with the VTAC flashlight mount, or theres a company who's name I cannot remember who makes all sorts of accessories and mounts for handguards like the MOE (slots, no rails)

I saw those via a link on... might have been m4carbine.net.

Thanks for the tip, guys! I'll check it out in more detail soon.

Magpul MOE grip and Palmetto LPK (thanks, Underwhere!)

+1. They go together very well. Except the MOE trigger-guard roll pin. That pin is made of unobtainium. I broke my vice trying to press it in.

Primary Arms sells some nice light kits, and some mount on the MOE handguard, I think.

Really? I gave mine a few whacks with a hammer and it went right in. [grin]

I started with a plastic hammer, moved to a brass hammer, to a regular old steel hammer, to pliers, to a vice-grip, to an actual vice. Ultimately got it in with a vice and a bigger hammer, but the vice, not the roll pin, was the first to quit.

It's still hanging out about 1/16", but I haven't had the courage to finish hammering it home yet.

I had a similar problem where I needed the roll pin just a hair smaller. I put the roll pin in my Electric Drill and let it spin while I held sand paper to it. It ground it down just enough to where I could hammer the pin in with the correct amount of pressure.

Good idea. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Too late for the current build, I imagine. If there's damage because of an oversized roll pin, then it's already done. C'est la vie. [thinking]

This is my first attempt to build a gun from a movie. The Scarface M16 with attached M203. Finding good pictures of the gun wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Most of the pics from the movie are dark and obviously HD cameras worn't used in the film. I did come across some pictures from when the gun went up for auction.

I've made this as close as I can to the original movie gun, though I know it's still not correct.

I still need to find a A1 type "E" stock as mine as the type "D".
The movie gun is obviously a M16, I settled for a SP1, but plan to change to a full-fence Colt lower at some point.
The closest I can find to the M203 they used is the Cobray M203.
The M203 sight is supposedly military issue. Looks like the one in the movie to me.
It took a little bit of looking, but I was able to find an A1 upper with a "tear drop" forward assist and no shell deflector. The one I bought had the 3 prong pickle fork but I switched it to a standard A1 birdcage.
While researching the movie gun I found that the one used had two 30 round mags that were taped using gaffer tape. Since my BIL works for the news, he was able to score me some.

I'll update this with better pictures when I have a chance.

Dude, NICE.

Glad you finally got that thing together.

Already sold mine. (Had to in order to help finance an engagement ring).

Still have my other Deleware lower in the safe...
