No, it's not a side bar, It's been in the news cycle since the day it happened and plenty of people outside of gun social media know about it, especially anyone who might travel to island destinations.Doubt, if you asked 50 random people about this incident, none of them would know WTF we were talking about.
This guy being in jail has been a sidebar at best outside of gun social media.
ETA: there are a lot of other authoritarian shithole nations that have similar laws, although, I would hazard a guess that on the ground, many dont overreact like this.

My point is, that governments in places that fully depend on incoming tourists need to get a grip on reality and have a little foresight as to how they treat minor incidents like this.
I'll bet that those on the islands don't agree with their government potentially driving away their business. Same goes for any tourist area. It's all about the money.....ALWAYS.
Yes, people fear all of those.........and the islanders fear the vacancies in their hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, beaches, diving and fishing charters, taxis and gift shops when tourists decide not to go to those places because they fear being targeted by the local constabulary for petty BS.Lol that still doesn't mean people are actually paying attention to it. I think you underestimate how f***ing retarded the average american is. They will keep going to these
authoritarian shithole countries as long as theres a perception of relative safety.
Also T&C isn't the only place with shitty gun laws.
The only thing that can cause them to lose money is kidnappings, rape, murder and theft. That stuff gets actual attention.,.. all else? meh.

Haha, Biden doesn't even give a crap about the US Citizens kidnapped and held hostage by Hamas. The US should aggressively pursue bringing home any US citizen accused of non-violent crimes overseas, especially those actions that are perfectly legal here in the US.

No matter how you slice it, It's a bad message being sent by their gov.
When one person who encounters a bad experience comes back home and tells five or ten of their friends, who tell five of their friends, the bad word spreads quickly. That equates to lost business.
Sounds like an amazing trip!We sailed overnight from Ft. Lauderdale to West End, Bahamas. When I checked in with a firearm and ammunition at immigration and customs everyone was very nice. After I did the checking in of my passengers a guy grabbed some paperwork and said, “I need to see your firearm. I don’t need to see the ammunition.”
We walked out of the office to the immigration dock just outside the office and I went onboard and got the pelican case and a key. I stood on the boat and he squatted down on the dock. ( 2 to 3 foot tides and no floating docks.) I opened the case took out the gun, racked the slide back locked it and set the gun down on the foam of the case. He compared the serial number on the paperwork with the number on the gun. “You’re all set.” he said.
26 days later we were back at West End to check out. It was Saturday the 25th, two days ago. We pulled into the basin and the Immigration and Customs dock was a madhouse so we went outside the harbour and anchored.
Later in the afternoon my wife and I launched out dinghy and took all our paperwork went into the harbour and went into the Customs and Immigration office.
A little background here is that we went online to the Bahamas Click to Clear and were asked to pay an additional $80.00 and check out a a C and I office.
Now at the C and I office they told us we were all set. They said as a US flagged vessel we didn’t need to pay the $80.00 and we could just leave without checking out.
So, we were all set. (I think rheir reasoning could be that the had a record of a gun we brought into their country and if it were to be used in a crime we’d be hearing from somebody.)
Outside the C and I office are trailers with vendors selling to the boaters pulling in. I bought two tubs of conch salad and two pina coladas.
There are picnic tables in front of the vendors and a table next to the C and I office. A C and I officer came out on the office and slapped me on the back. “Did you have a cocktail yet?”
I had one and I’m going to have another.”
Big smile.
I had a “Goombay Smash” next. It was good.
We dnghied back to the boat and left Sunday night at 2100 with a decent weather window to Ft. Pierce.
Got to Ft. Pierce at 0900 today, Memorial Day.
So, uneventful.
Not in prison.
My bet is that no one outside of NES knows this is going on. I wouldn't know if it wasn't for this thread. My point is, that governments in places that fully depend on incoming tourists need to get a grip on reality and have a little foresight as to how they treat minor incidents like this.

I’m probably working my way down to the Turks and Caicos next year.
It’s been good to know you.
With some countries the concern is making sure you take the gun with you when you leave. Sometimes vistors are required to post a cash bond comparable to the guns value - that was refunded upon exit. South Africa was at one time embargoed from gun exports, but you could still get papers to bring handguns in as a visitor shooting a competition. One police officer (US small town) told he was offered a very good price for his 1911, including an official police report to "prove" the gun was stolen during his visit. He declined. So, we were all set. (I think rheir reasoning could be that the had a record of a gun we brought into their country and if it were to be used in a crime we’d be hearing from somebody.).
If the world wasn't so retarded every nation would have an FTZ where foreigners could dock boats, and no customs BS till you walk onto the mainland.I’m probably working my way down to the Turks and Caicos next year.

Some container ship security details actually throw their EBRs overboard when approaching certain ports in total gun ban countries. If the world wasn't so retarded every nation would have an FTZ where foreigners could dock boats, and no customs BS till you walk onto the mainland.
We went into the Customs and Immigration office in Marsh Harbour to ask about checking out with a firearm.I don't remember which "developing nation" it was, but one had a police escort for the drive from the hotel to the range to prevent hijackers from getting the guns.
My bet is that no one outside of NES knows this is going on. I wouldn't know if it wasn't for this thread.

Meh, still don't see it. I think it's because you guys are getting salted results with all that shit that shows up on search engines etc. These devices produce content that they think you want to see. My parents have faux blaring on TV every night and haven't heard it on there even once. It’s been one of the top stories on mainstream news ever since the first guy got arrested.
Really? It’s been one of the top stories on mainstream news ever since the first guy got arrested.

The only times I see the news is when I am at the barber or it is too cold for cardio so I do it at the gym. I haven't seen it at the barber. I did some rowing today and didn't see it at the gym.
That is your problem, you keep looking at CNN and CBS.I don’t watch tv news, but it’s been on websites on the main page.
Double checking and apparently it has now been downgraded or dropped by all of them since Turks thankfully caved and abandoned their mandatory punishment. Doesn’t make titillating news anymore.
CBS and CNN still have it on the first page of world news though.
That is your problem, you keep looking at CNN and CBS.
I ended up in a ban-state with a loaded 30-rnd mag once. Once I figured it out, I pulled off the highway and tossed it in a river. Short version is my range bag and travel bag look the same. Black mag under a black fold of fabric. When you take a dozen or so mags to the range, it's easy to overlook one. When you're in a rush to pack, it's easy to overlook it again. There are LOTS and LOTS of casual gun owners/carriers in this country who are smart enough to realize that they too could not notice a cartridge in their luggage. Or even just have an irrational fear of it happening because they know they’re careful but it still eats at the back of their head.
Outside of the northeast it is very common for non-gun people to have handguns in their purse or briefcase/messenger bag, or glove box. They rarely go to the range, but they do still have guns integrated into their lives. These types of people are very common and they also overlap a good bit on the venn diagram with those who visit Turks.
And yes, this story has been all over the national news cycle and there is no way the people described above haven’t been paying attention.
The punishment does not fit the crime. TCI has relied on the US for all sorts of shit throughout its history. Hell, fhe friggen airport i landed on in south caicos was built by the us to accommodate the loran station. Some of y'all are wild.
Sure. Let's start a war with some po-dunk island nation because some of our citizens were too stupid to understand the local laws. How could that possibly be a bad idea?
NES loves it when the government bails people out of the problems their irresponsibility lead them into. LOVES it.
